Voyages and travels, into Brasil, and the East-Indies: containing, an exact description of the Dutch Brasil, and divers parts of the East-Indies; their provinces, cities, living creatures, and products; the manners, customs, habits, and religion of the inhabitants: with a most particular account of all the remarkable passages that happened during the author's stay of nine years in Brasil; especially, in relation to the revolt of the Portugueses, and the intestine war carried on there from 1640 to 1649, as also, a most ample description of the most famous city of Batavia, in the East-Indies. The author, a Dutch traveler and official, left two very interesting accounts of his years spent in Dutch Brazil and the Dutch East Indies. About the Author:-Johan Nieuhof (1618 in Uelsen 1672 in Madagascar) was a Dutch traveler who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2,400 kilometers from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China. He wrote -- An embassy from the East-India Company containing the written account of this journey.Nieuhof was employed in Brazil to explore the regions between Maranhão and the São Francisco Rivers, made a particular study of the neighborhood of Pernambuco. The book was first published in Dutch in 1665 by Johan's brother Hendrik and the Amsterdam based publisher and printer Jacob van Meurs. The publication was successful, several edited editions followed, geared towards commercial interests, also translated into French, German, Latin and eventually into English. The English version was not published by Van Meurs, but by John Ogilby instead. The book consists of the notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made in his position as a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer's embassy to the emperor of China. The work itself is split into two parts. The first part contains the written account of the embassy led by Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer to the emperor of China. It details the entire journey from "Guangzhou"Canton to Peking and back again. This part also contains descriptions and depictions of all that the embassy came to pass on its trip. First edition in English of Nieuhoff's definitive account of the 1655-57 Dutch diplomatic mission to Beijing, the first VOC attempt to secure access to Chinese ports for trade. This edition provided the textual and visual reference points for many subsequent English-language books on China. As the expedition's steward, artist, and chronicler, Nieuhoff kept detailed journals of the proceedings. The plates, based on his now-lost watercolours, show Macau as seen from the water, Nanjing and its Porcelain Pagoda, Beijing and the Forbidden City, and "types", including a mandarin and a noblewoman. This was the first of Ogilby's "great atlases". Following Nieuhoff's account of the embassy is the section offering a "General Description of the Empire of China." "In it were included the drawing of some Chinese characters, a discussion of Confucius and Chinese philosophy, the clothing worn by Chinese, including a depiction of the bound feet of women, various burial customs, and an illustrated tale of beggars who tormented themselves in order to beg more successfully. In the present work it comprises over 100 pages, as richly illustrated as Nieuhoff's account which precedes it."The Dutch being at the height of their power, having supplanted the Portuguese, desired to gain access to China and a portion of the Chinese trade. After much opposition the Government succeeded in sending certain merchants to try the pulse of the Chinese at Canton. Upon their report it was determined to dispatch ambassadors from Batavia to the Court of Peking to solicit liberty to trade. This is the embassy written up by Nieuhoff, who was steward to the ambassadors. Its failure led the Dutch to send other embassies. These are the ones written by Montanus" (Cox I: 325). Translator Ogilby devoted the last years of his life to producing works of geography and topography: he "may be considered as the English De Bry, as his works are similar in their objects, compilation, and mode of illustrations" (Cox II:69). CONDITION OF THE MAP: The map is in excellent condition with some old folds, and one old small tear mend to the verso, it is solid and stable and complete . *** THE COPPER-ENGRAVED PLATES: FULL AND ONE-THIRD PAGE SIZE: . There are 41 full-page copper engraved plates, 26.5 x 41 cm. [sheet size], average image size 22 x 31 cm. The text engravings are average 15 or 16.5 x 9.5 or 10 cm. Many engravings by Hollar. . Note: Because there is no printed list of plates in this work, the actual location of some of the full-page engravings may differ or not be present. Also, the engraving count may differ between the various copies and editions. These early books were assembled by very young and mostly illiterate "printer's devil." The insertion of the plates were commonly inserted upside down, or omitted by their error. Due to this reason, total print count may vary. On page 220, the one-third engraving: "CHINESE PRIESTS AND MONKS" is upside down. There is a pagination error from page 184, where the page numbers skip to page 205 and continue onward. This simply means an error in the numbering the pages, nothing is missing or lacking. Part one properly ends at page 327.There are a few of the usual "printer's devil" feint inky finger prints in the margin of a few pages.
