Originally written in nine separate volumes, Judaism in Late Antiquity now appears, unabridged, in three. The entire work seeks to offer readers both a broad perspective on the shape of Judaism while also opening the way to understanding unique issues. It does not disappoint.VOLUME 1, including contributions by Paul Flesher, William Scott Green, Günter Stemberg, James F. Strange, looks at the literary and archeological sources to answer the question, "What are the sources for the study of Judaism in Late Antiquity." Part two of this volume then guides the reader into how those sources help in the reconstruction of the history of "various Judaic systems in antiquity." VOLUME 2 concentrates on the issues and debates in ancient Judaism, that is, those topics that animate scholarly dialogue today. Thus volume 2 , under the expert tutelage of Philip Davies, Lester Grabbe, and, among others, Louis Feldman, Steve Mason, James D. G. Dunn, challenges the reader with "systematic presentations of a distinctive viewpoint and very particular results" (preface, vol. 2) on such hot topics as the Law in Judaism, the use of rabbinic sources, and the place of groups within Second Temple Judaism, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees or the Samaritans. Scholars like Eric Meyers, Jodi Magness, and Joseph Naveh devote roughly 180 pages to the thorny question of the special problem of the synagogue.Using the technique of debate and response the articles bring the reader to the nub of the issues quickly and decisively. VOLUME 3 takes a look from a variety of sources and points of view at topics and themes at the center of scholarly debate, namely, resurrection and aferlife in the various writings of Judaism: Wisdom literature, Psalms, Apocalyptic Literature, Pseudepigraph, Philo and Josephus, and Qumran, among others. Again, top scholars like George Nicklesburg, John J. Collins, Roland Murphy, Richard Elliot Friedman, and Leon Rutgers bring to bear on these topics years of experience. The second half of volume 3 looks at Qumran with the same intensity. Editors Neusner, Avery-Peck, and Chilton must be commended for this generous gift both to the scholarly guild and to the general reader looking for a thought-provoking overview of the main issues in the central academic conversations. Articles in Volume One are "Introduction: The Scholarly Study of Judaism and Its Sources," William Scott Green, "Non-Rabbinic Literature," Günter Stemberger, "The Targumim," Paul Flesher, "The Art and Archaeolgy of Ancient Judaism," James F. Strange, "Defining Rabbinic Literature and its Principle Parts," Jacob Neusner, "The Mishanh, Tosefta, and the Talmuds," Alan J. Avery-Peck, "Rabbinic Midrash," Gary G. In this volume, the author analyzes Tractate Demai ("Doubtfully Tithed Produce") in Mishnah and Tosefta, the earliest extant literary sources of rabbinic Judaism. Demai is the third tractate of Seder Zeraim ("Order of Seeds") of the Mishnah and of the Talmud. There is some debate as to the literal meaning and origin of the word. It is concerned mainly with laws related to produce where it is suspected that ma'aser rishon (the first tithe for the Levi), terumat ma'aser and ma'aser sheini (the second tithe) or ma'aser ani (the tithe for the poor), depending on the year of the Shemittah cycle, have not been properly separated in accordance with Num. 18:24-28. It consists of seven chapters and has a Gemara from only the Jerusalem Talmud. Previous owner's stamp on front free endpaper (Rabbi Martin A. Cohen). Binding and interior in very good condition.

Publisher's logo on front board and title page. Devotion to the study of the Babylonian Talmud, a document of law and theology completed in the seventh century A.D. and thereafter the primary and authoritative source of Judaic legal and moral teachings, was one of the distinctive traits of Russian Jewry before 1917. The five papers contained in this volume show part of what was accomplished after that time by a Talmudist who was also trained in Soviet historical sciences and Marxist theory. The papers are important for three reasons. First, they contain important insights and critical perspectives hitherto unavailbale to Western scholarship in the history of Judaism in late antiquity. Second, they underline the importance of introducing into the study of Talmudic and other ancient legal literature a concern for the economic foundations of the laws. Third, they provide a glimpse into the mind of a segment of the Soviet Jewish community during its long period of silence, specifically, the segment which evidently attempted to reach an accomodation between the classical Judaic heritage, on the one hand, and the new modes of thought and expression under Soviet Communism, on the other. Solodukho made the effort both to preserve the traditions of Talmudic learning acquired in his youth and to master and make use of the Marxist hermeneutic which came to dominance in his mature years. The five papers contained in this volume are the following: 1) Slavery in the Hebrew society of Iraq and Syria in the second through fifth centuries A.D.; 2) On the question of the social structure of Iraq in the third to the fifth centuries A.D.; 3 ) The Mazdak movement and rebellion of the Hebrew population of Iraq in the first half of the sixth century A.D.; 4) The Persian administrative-legal, socio-economic, and everyday lexicon in the Jewish-Iraqi literary monuments of the Sasanian period; 5) Concerning certain Persian borrowings in the Babylonian Gemara. Ex-library copy with sticker remnants at tail of spine and library stamp on front free endpaper and half-title (Hebrew Union College). Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition.
