Añadir al carritoThiaridae are a speciose group of freshwater snails in tropical areas including a high number of described nominal taxa for which modern revisions are mostly lacking. Using an integrative approach, the systematic status of a group of thiarids from the Oriental region, including the nominal species Melania aspera and M. rudis, is reassessed on the basis of shell morphology and biometry, radula dentition patterns, and reproductive biology along with molecular genetic methods. Our results suggest that populations from the Oriental region cannot be distinguished on the basis of shell morphology, radula characters and their reproductive mode and are monophyletic based on mitochondrial sequences. Hence, M. rudis with M. aspera are regarded as belonging to the same species along with several other nominal taxa that were previously included in M. rudis. Moreover, populations from Thailand and Australia, from where the species was not previously recorded, could be shown to form a monophyletic group together with samples from Indonesia. However, a generic affiliation with Thiara, in which the investigated taxa were often included in the past, was not supported in our phylogenetic analyses, highlighting the need for a comprehensive revision of the genus-group systematics of Thiaridae as a whole. pp. 373-390, 7 figs, 4 tabs, 4.

Añadir al carritoThe more than 20 extant members of the genus Canariella Hesse, 1918 are all endemic to the Canary Islands. From the largest island of the Canarian Archipelago, Tenerife, only 5 species of the genus are currently recognised as valid species. This comparatively low number of species is suprising when compared with diversity of other endemic genera of the Canary Islands and when compared with the diversity of Canariella on other large, high islands of this archipelago.We critically review the diversity of the Canariella hispidula (Lamarck, 1822) group on the basis of the available published data, as well as on the basis of materials in musem collections and the collections of the authors. Of the 9 previously described taxa belonging to this species complex we recognise 6 as valid species, namely C. hispidula, C. berthelotii (d'Orbigny, 1836), C. leprosa (Shuttleworth, 1852), C. lanosa (Mousson, 1872), C. subhispidula (Mousson, 1872), and C. everia (Mabille, 1882). The nominal taxon Helix (Gonostoma) beata Wollaston, 1878 is considered as a subspecies of C. berthelotii, while the nominal taxa Helix fortunata Shuttleworth, 1852 and Helicodonta salteri Gude, 1911 are considered synonyms of C. berthelotii and C. hispidula, respectively. The taxon from the southern and south-eastern parts of Tenerife previously considered to represent "C. bertheloti (Férussac, 1835)" is described as a new species, Canariella hartmuti sp. nov. The designation of a "lectotype" by Ibánez et al. (1995) for this unavailable name is withdrawn. The taxa C. leprosa and C. everia are placed in an undescribed subgenus, while the remaining taxa are placed in the nomintae subgenus Canariella s.str. A new genus Wollastonia gen. n., two recent species, W. jessicae sp. n. and W. klausgrohi sp. n., and one recent subspecies, W. jessicae monticola ssp. n. are described as new to science, as well as five fossil taxa, H. microcarinata sp. n., W. beckmanni sp. n., W. falknerorum sp. n., W. ripkeni sp. n., and W. inexpectata sp. n. For Helix vermetiformis R. T. Lowe, 1855, H. leacockiana Wollaston, 1878, H. oxytropis R. T. Lowe, 1831, H. duplicata R. T. Lowe, 1831 and H. oxytropis var. ß subcarinulata Wollaston, 1878 lectotypes are designated. For the taxa Helix bicarinata G. B. Sowerby I, 1824, Helix bicarinata var. ß aucta Wollaston, 1878 and Discula bulverii W. Wood, 1828 neotypes are selected. The taxa aucta and subcarinulata are elevated to specific rank. For the hitherto monospecific (sub-) genus Callina R. T. Lowe, 1855 it is shown that it is not closely related to the genus Discula but to the Hystricella-group and its generic rank is confirmed. The taxon D. bulverii W. Wood, 1828 is transferred from the genus Discula s. str. to the genus Callina. A further fossil taxon C. waldeni sp. n. is described as new to science. 125 pp., 232 figs, br. gr. 8 [16.5 x 24 cm].

All nomenclaturally available names are discussed including junior homonyms and objective junior synonyms as well as unavailable names such as nomina nuda, infrasubspecific names and, to some extent, also incorrect subsequent spellings. In the family-group a total of 28 names are included in the nomenclator, of which 21 are available and seven unavailable names. Of the available names in the family-group, six are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. In the genus-group a total of 57 names are included in the catalogue. Of the available names in the genus-group, 11 are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. In the species-group a total of 499 names are included, of which 463 are available, but 21 are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. All names are given in their original combination and spelling (mandatory changes are discussed and corrected spellings are provided), along with the reference to the original publication. For each family- and genus-group name, the original classification and the type genus or type species, respectively, are given. For species-group taxa the type locality and type horizon (for fossil taxa) are provided, usually as given in the original publication.
