Condición: Fine. 248, col illus. 280x240mm. HB. Fine copy. Inscribed to Prof. Michael Claridge by Hannelore Landsberg (nee Hoch), one of the contributors to this volume. Accompanying the re-opening of the refurbishment of the exhibition halls at the Berlin Natural History Museum in July 2007 and the installation of the new perma…nent exhibition Evolution in Action, this book of essays suggests answers to questions about the origins and evolution of life on our planet. An investigation into the interactions between the natural world and its environment, 'Evolution in Action' reveals the incredible amount of change that constantly goes on around us. [9783791361277].

In molluscs the majority of marine species is oviparous, whereas viviparity is frequently found among freshwater inhabitants. Here some findings from limnic gastropods are discussed and their evolutionary implications outlined. Recent studies reveal that live-bearing strategies have not only evolved repeatedly and independently…among limnic gastropods, but also within limnic Cerithioidea, a diverse and speciose caenogastropod superfamily. Some of its constituent taxa evolved breeding along separate evolutionary avenues, involving distinct morphological structures (uterine brood sacs vs. subhaemocoelic brood pouches) and life-history strategies including nourishment of the brood via matrotrophy, as found in some species of Thiaridae s.str. It is concluded that (i) a uterine viviparous strategy, as found in lacustrine taxa from Lake Tanganyika (Lavigeria, Tiphobia), Lake Biwa in Japan (Semisulcospira) and from the central lakes on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (Tylomelania), evolved several times in parallel, and (ii) that the subhaemocoelic brood pouch also derived convergently at least in the marine Planaxidae, some SE Asian Pachychilidae and the Thiaridae s.str., while the mesopodial brood pouch of the Tanganyikan paludomid Tanganyicia rufofilosa has to be considered again an independently evolved structure. 6 pp., gr. 8.

Dr. Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix collected Mollusca in South America from 1817 to 1820. After his return to Europe he completed the plates, including their legends, and brief diagnoses for a monograph on the taxa he had collected, but died in 1826 before the main text was written. Dr. Johann Andreas Wagner was enlisted to comp…lete the monograph, which he did, and it was published in 1827. In total, 64 gastropod and 20 bivalve taxa were illustrated. In developing the monograph for publication, Wagner altered Spix's concepts of many of the taxa, in some cases using his own name, not Spix's, as the author of the name. We discuss Wagne's rationale for making these changes. We discuss the appropriate citation of the authorship of the work, concluding that it should be cited as of Wagner alone. We also discuss the appropriate authorship of the species, concluding that in all cases in which Spix had provided a name on the plates authorship should be given as "Spix in Wagner". Wagner also created some new names, three of which are replacements for Spix's names, which are preoccupied, but the remaining ones are unnecessary replacement names for Spix's names (of which they are therefore junior objective synonyms). Spix's type material is in the Zoologische Staatssammlung in Munich, although some of it is missing as a result of damage sustained during World War II. 17 pp., 4 figs, 4.

Thiaridae are a speciose group of freshwater snails in tropical areas including a high number of described nominal taxa for which modern revisions are mostly lacking. Using an integrative approach, the systematic status of a group of thiarids from the Oriental region, including the nominal species Melania aspera and M. rudis, is… reassessed on the basis of shell morphology and biometry, radula dentition patterns, and reproductive biology along with molecular genetic methods. Our results suggest that populations from the Oriental region cannot be distinguished on the basis of shell morphology, radula characters and their reproductive mode and are monophyletic based on mitochondrial sequences. Hence, M. rudis with M. aspera are regarded as belonging to the same species along with several other nominal taxa that were previously included in M. rudis. Moreover, populations from Thailand and Australia, from where the species was not previously recorded, could be shown to form a monophyletic group together with samples from Indonesia. However, a generic affiliation with Thiara, in which the investigated taxa were often included in the past, was not supported in our phylogenetic analyses, highlighting the need for a comprehensive revision of the genus-group systematics of Thiaridae as a whole. pp. 373-390, 7 figs, 4 tabs, 4.

Stenomelania snails (Fisher 1885) have been reported from the coastal regions of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, spanning India to Australia. Here, the species diversity and distribution of these snails in the south of Thailand are recorded. The snails were also examined for trematode infections in 13 locations in three…Provinces, viz. Krabi, Trang and Satun, along the coast of the Andaman Sea. A total of 1,551 snails were in five morphs tentatively identified as Stenomelania aspirans, S. crenulata, S. punctata, S. torulosa and the closely-related Neoradina prasongi. With 10 infected snails, the trematode infection rate was 0.64%. The cercariae were categorised into three species from two morphologically-distinguishable types, viz. parapleurolophocercous cercariae (Haplorchis taichui and Procerovum cheni) and xiphidiocercariae (Loxogenoides bicolor), through the morphological characterisation of the larval stage. These trematodes were also analysed using the internal transcribed spacer subunit II region to confirm the species identity at generic and infrageneric levels. 23 pp., 6 figs, 4 tabs, 4.

This nomenclator provides bibliographic details on all names in the family-, genus-, and species-group of the the family Paludomidae. All nomenclaturally available names are discussed including junior homonyms and objective junior synonyms as well as unavailable names such as nomina nuda, infrasubspecific names and, to some exte…nt, also incorrect subsequent spellings. In the family-group a total of 28 names are included in the nomenclator, of which 21 are available and seven unavailable names. Of the available names in the family-group, six are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. In the genus-group a total of 57 names are included in the catalogue. Of the available names in the genus-group, 11 are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. In the species-group a total of 499 names are included, of which 463 are available, but 21 are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. All names are given in their original combination and spelling (mandatory changes are discussed and corrected spellings are provided), along with the reference to the original publication. For each family- and genus-group name, the original classification and the type genus or type species, respectively, are given. For species-group taxa the type locality and type horizon (for fossil taxa) are provided, usually as given in the original publication. A new name, Cleopatra adami nom. nov., is proposed for the fossil Cleopatra cylindrica (Adam, 1957), which is a homonym of Cleopatra cridlandi cylindrica Mandahl-Barth, 1954, and a lectotype for Cleopatra dubia Adam, 1959 is designated. A new replacement name Leloupiella nom. nov. is proposed for Stormsia Leloup, 1953 which is a homonym of Stormsia Bourguignat, 1891. 132 pp., gr. 8.
