Terrestrial Orchids, is part of a research program to study and photograph orchid species from the Eastern Himalayas, covering the regions of Eastern Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling district, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland. Two monumental publications-The Flora of British India (1890) by Sir J.D. Hook…er and The Orchids of the Sikkim Himalaya (1898) by Sir George King and Robert Pantling were relied on. Each species was located in its natural habitat and documented while in bloom, ample time was devoted for this purpose, thereby updating the flowering time precisely, altitudinal range widely, habitat proximately and natural characteristics to detailed perfection. The study also focused on preparing a status report on the population of each species to initiate various conservation programs. I, till date, am successful in compiling documentary evidence of 780 species of orchids in the region of Eastern Himalayas, trekking more than 45000 km on foot. This publication, the first of its kind, is a collection of 108 rare to very rare ground orchids in the region. Majority of them are the first ever photographic evidence. During the course of study, not a single specimen was collected nor damaged. Religiously utmost care was taken so as not to disturb the sanctimonious habitat of the studied specimens. The nomenclature of each species is in accordance with the current World Checklist of selected plant families, Kew Royal Botanic Gardens. (jacket).

The lack of any basic facilities, the ever present fear of physical distress, and the difficulties of evacuat…ion in a medical emergency have made very few venture to those heights. Even a visit to these heights is treacherous, not to mention the exploratory work there for months together. As the snow melts by late May, a fascinating world of high altitude plants springs to life. Many of these floral wonders have never been studied or photo documented in any detail. For the last six years, I have spent an average of six months a year in the mountains above 15000 ft, studying and documenting this diversity of plants. The book, Hidden Treasures: Rare Plants of the Alpine Himalaya, showcases a collection of 100 rare to very rare alpine plants, including 14 new reports for India, all found above 15000 ft with the highest from 19400 ft in the eastern Himalaya - Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. The list includes rare to very rare species like, Aconitum violaceum, Chionocharis hookeri, Chrysosplenium sikangense, Delphinium lacostei, Erysimum chamaephyton, Microula hispidissima, Primula sibirica, Silene gonosperma, Waldheimia glabra etc. The front cover is of Przewalskia tangutica - a new report for India and the back cover is adored by the most stunning plant of the Himalaya, the Rheum nobile.

It is the headquarters of Lower Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh in north-east India and situated at an elevation of 5538 to 8000 ft… above MSL. This book, Orchids of Ziro: Arunachal Pradesh, is a result of that exploration and is a collection of 150 species, out of a total of 184 species located and studied in Ziro - with 30 new reports for the state, which includes 11 new reports for the whole of India. The list includes Anoectochilus regalis Blume, Bulbophyllum corallinum Tixier and Guillaumin, Calanthe velutina Ridl., Dendrobium brunneum Schuit. and Peter B. Adams and Lecanorchis japonica Blume etc. For the compilation, I criss-crossed more than 12,000 km on foot, covering almost all the forested areas of Ziro, comprising 7 villages and the protected areas of Tale Wildlife Sanctuary. Each species is presented with 2 photographs - habitat as well as close-up of the flower - while the description and other details are compiled from the specimens studied in-situ. The findings reveal that Ziro is the place with the largest concentration of various orchid species in India, if not on Earth.
