BOOK DESCRIPTION: 4 Volume Set Complete. Each volume is 8vo. Vol. 1 466 pgs; Vol. 2 viii, 455 pgs; Vol. 3 viii, 556 pgs; Vol. 4. All in matching blue cloth with gilt decorated front covers and gilt titled spines. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing to edges. V. 1 with inked name of former owner (E.S. Hunter, Major 58th Mass Vols., Capt Co. C and Capt. Co. C of 47th Mass Inf.). Vols 2-4 with the bookplates of Gerald Howe Totten, Major, U.S. Army. Front hinges on Vol. 2-3 are cracked but holding. Vol. 3 with additional bookplate presenting this volume from the Wisconsin Commandery to Major Totten of Masilla, NM. Overall, VG and a well-matched set. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The collections of published MOLLUS papers by the various State Commanderies contains a wealth of interesting and valuable personal narratives. Each of the four volumes contain approximately 34 papers per volume, 135 total. From the forward of vol 4: "Several of the papers contain important and valuable additions to the history of events which happened in that memorable period, and, told by those who witnessed the scenes described, they have great value. These 'War Papers' issued by the State Commanderies are a unique contribution to history. In no other war have the participants made such a record of their acts; they constitute a legacy to the Nation second only to the deeds described; they are an enduring monument which time will not destroy; their value will increase with the lapse of years; they will be precious to the descendants of those who freely offered their lives to secure the perpetuity of the Nation. The volumes are not a historian's history, they were written by those who made the history and who describe what they assisted in doing to preserve the Union and the honor of the Flag." Excellent and scarce as a full set. While most of the personal narratives and papers were presented by Wisconsin soldiers, there are additional papers presented by veterans of other states and includes narratives from all theaters of the war, including the Trans-Mississippi and naval operations. Relative to the former owner, the vol. 3 bookplate has a pencil notation indicating Totten's ("my") father was a major in the 5th Wisconsin, and that the paper on page 525 is about that regiment. REFERENCE: Nevins I pg 131: On the state published MOLLUS Papers: "The more active of the various state commanders of this organization published volumes containing personal reminiscences of life in camp, battle and prison. The account vary widely in accuracy and quality; generally speaking, however, these volumes can, and with considerable digging, yield useful nuggets." Multiple DORN references included.
