From the Preface: "Memorials of deceased Companions of the Illinois Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States have been prepared as the occasions have arisen, and are reproduced here for the most part as originally printed. They thus reflect in some measure the kindly judgment and sincere sorrow with which their Companions of the Commandery have bidden these departed members 'hail and farewell'.".
