There were thousands like them, but few left so clear a record of their experiences. Rachel Bowman and Samuel Cormany met in 1858 when they were students at Otterbein University in Ohio. From that time until 1865 they both kept diaries that recount, from their different perspectives, their courtship and marriage, the birth of their first child, and, most importantly, life on the Northern side during the Civil War. Like her husband, Rachel came from a farming family, but she was a well~educated woman for her day; she was determined to outdo the boys at college and, after graduation, to find a job in New York City. When her husband enlists in a cavalry unit, she is alone with her baby in Chambersburg, Pa. She writes poignantly of her anxieties, her poverty, and her loneliness. Samuel's Civil War is quite different. He is an ambitious soldier, proud of his growing military experience, and excited by the engagements he participates in. His entries contain vivid descriptions of camp life, cavalry raids, army politics, and his battles with alcohol. James c. Mohr, Professor of History at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, has arranged the diaries so that the voices of husband and wife alternate. His notes discuss many of the issues of interest to the diarists~evangelical religion, hydropathy, childbirth, phrenology~and the Civil War battles at Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Appomattox. This is an important and absorbing book for anyone interested in the social history of the Civil War period in America.
