Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the historical and political contention between Peru and Ecuador over the territories of Quijos, Canelos, and Maynas, three vast regions encompassing the headwaters of the Amazon and Napo rivers. The author argues that extensive archival research, including previously unpublished documents, demonstrates that these areas have been historically administered by and belonged to Peru, particularly during the colonial period under Spanish rule. They cite numerous expeditions and administrative acts as evidence of Peruvian authority in these regions. The book also examines the role of Catholic missionaries in the disputed territories, arguing that they largely depended on Peruvian support and administration. The author highlights that the main ecclesiastic jurisdictions and religious orders operating in these regions were based in Peru. Ultimately, the book concludes that Peru has the strongest historical and legal claim to the territories in question, refuting arguments put forth by Ecuadorian historians and politicians. The author emphasizes that recognizing Peru's legitimate rights to these regions is crucial for resolving longstanding border disputes and ensuring stability in the Amazonian frontier. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book uses a detailed historical accounting and descriptive analysis to unravel the border disputes that arose between Ecuador and Peru in the 19th century. Bringing the reader from the initial conquest of the regions in question by the Spanish in 1539 through a succession of wars, skirmishes, and treaties that lasted until the mid 19th century, the book offers a detailed summary of who was fighting who and why over the remote regions of Quijos and Canelos, from the local indigenous tribes through the Spanish colonial era and ultimately into the modern nation state era of South American history. The book concludes by highlighting the use of religious expeditions and their subsequent mapping and exploration as an integral part of the broader conflict that helped to cement Peru's ultimate victory in the region, showing that the historical precedent established by the conquistadors and their missionary allies set the stage for the borders we see today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
