Softcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. With an arcing and emphatic beauty, Ghalib, the Indian Beloved by Khalid Hameed Shaida is a starry-eyed collection of one hundred and twenty-four translated odes by Ghalib. Capturing the essence and pure song of one of the most loved romantic poets of India, Shaida's translation and interpretations also illustrate the deeply philosophical undertones of Ghalib's voice. Born into the gentry in the dying days of the Mughal Empire, Ghalib led a charmed life as a darling of the last Mughal king, himself a renowned poet. Primarily, Ghalib's body of work celebrates feminine beauty, often bemoaning the cruelness of unrequited affection. For his part, Shaida, who is best known for his previous collections entitled Khusro, the Indian Orpheus; Hafiz, Drunk with God; and Hafiz, the Voice of God, carries on the Eastern tradition that makes the most of the playful, yet thoughtful, exuberance of love, passion, and endearing wiles of the heart. Ghalib (1797-1869) is undoubtedly one of the greatest Indian poets. Playful yet complex, simple and yet erudite, Ghalib's poetry mixes metaphors, ignores the rules of grammar, shuns ornamentation and takes recourse to linguistic innovations to ponder over issues of life, death, love and God. The present translation of two hundred couplets from the Urdu Diwan seeks to combine the music of Galib's poetry with a probing into his thoughts.…

Soft cover. Condición: New. Chirag-e-Dair, The Lamp of the Temple, is perhaps the greatest secular poem ever written by an Indian. It is Mirza Ghalib's eulogy on Banaras, the quintessential Hindu place of pilgrimage, a holy place where according to the Hindus a man is released from the cycle of the birth and death and becomes one with God. All this is completely alien to Islam. And yet, Ghalib a born Muslim not only sings paeans to Banaras but expresses a yearning to lead life like a Hindu practising all rituals and customs associated with Banaras On way to Calcutta in connection with his pension case, Ghalib fell ill and was forced to spend many months in Lucknow and Banda from where he reached Banaras. It was only after reaching Banaras that his health fully recovered. The climate of Banaras, its lovely natural surroundings, its gardens, temples and the inhabitants fascinated him so much that he immediately fell in love with the city and wrote a long poem in Persian which he titled as Chirag-e-Dair. Ghalib is by common consent the greatest Urdu poet but he rated his Persian poetry much higher than his Urdu verse. And Chirag-e-Dair has a pride of place in that Persian poetry.…
