Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Like his compositions, Milton Babbitt's writings about music have exerted an extraordinary influence on postwar music and thinking about music. In essays and public addresses spanning fifty years, Babbitt has grappled profoundly with central questions in the composition and apprehension of music. These writings range from personal memoirs and critical reviews to closely reasoned metatheoretical speculations and technical exegesis. In the history of music theory, there has been only a small handful of figures who have produced work of comparable stature. Taken as a whole, Babbitt's writings are not only an invaluable testimony to his thinking--a priceless primary source for the intellectual and cultural history of the second half of the twentieth century--but also a remarkable achievement in their own right. Prior to this collection, Babbitt's writings were scattered through a wide variety of journals, books, and magazines--many hard to find and some unavailable--and often contained typographical errors and editorial corruptions of various kinds. This volume of almost fifty pieces gathers, corrects, and annotates virtually everything of significance that Babbitt has written. The result is complete, authoritative, and fully accessible--the definitive source of Babbitt's influential ideas.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: near fine. First Edition. First printing, quarto size, 216 pp. From the web site of the publisher: "Many consider Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Milton Babbitt to be the preeminent figure in post-World War II American music. Beyond the extraordinary power of his music, he is also, as he says, 'somewhat known as a talker.' In fact, he is renowned as an energetic teacher and inspired lecturer. "In 1983 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Babbitt presented a concise summary of his most essential musical insights in a series of lectures and seminars. These are gathered here, presenting for the first time in book form a comprehensive overview of the subjects that have formed the core of his teaching for the past forty years." The hardcover edition out of print with the publisher, and as of this writing, we see no copies available in the online marketplace. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full purple cloth over boards, silver lettering on the spine, stated first printing on the copyright page; binding quarto size (10 1/4" by 7 1/4"), pagination: [i-iv] v-ix [1, blank] [1-2] 3-205 [1, colophon]. The dust jacket with an image of Babbit on the front, unclipped and unpriced, summary of book on the front flap, reproduction of a black-and-white photograph of the author and editors on the back flap. ___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a few very light marks on the front board, else fine. The jacket near fine, clean, free of tears, with light overall wear. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 72 pages. Published in 2005. Rare Milton Babbitt collectible item. A fine copy of the Souvenir Program of the Boston Symphony Orchestra 2004/2005 Season Souvenir Program, signed by Milton Babbitt. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Without DJ, as issued. A rare signature by the late great American composer, obtained on the occasion of the world premiere performance of his "Concerti For Orchestra" by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Commissioned by BSO, conducted by Music Director James Levine, with the composer in attendance on January 13, 2005. There is a brilliant and illuminating five-page Essay by musicologist Robert Kirzinger - written in consultation with the composer - on the piece and Milton Babbitt's place in contemporary music, if he may deservedly say so himself, accompanied with illustrations. Plus, a lovely group portrait of Babbitt with James Levine and fellow greats Elliott Carter, Charles Wuorinen, and Leon Kirchner, some of whose works were also commissioned and first performed by BSO. A great memento/souvenir of a magnificent historic performance. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Milton Babbitt collectors. This copy of the Souvenir Program is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the Program Schedule page by Milton Babbitt. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, attended the performance, is a lifelong BSO patron, and cannot be named here at his request. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of this historic program available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Milton Babbitt did NOT do public signings. He signed for private individuals only. A very rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest composers of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. Signed by Author.
