English This volume VI from the A. & C. Black Turner-illustrated edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. carries particular biographical resonance, pairing Scott?s poetry with views closely tied to his own life and literary inspiration. The frontispiece presents Loch Coriskin (now commonly spelled Loch Coruisk) on the Isle of Skye, engraved by Henry Le Keux after Turner?s dramatic Highland composition. The title-page vignette shows Abbotsford, Scott?s own home, creating a direct visual link between poet and place. These plates, originally prepared in the 1830s for the Cadell edition, were among the most admired in the series for their blend of topographical accuracy and romantic atmosphere.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. Mark of ownership. Ex-libris op schutblad. Foxing. Frontispiece en titelvignet. English This is a mid-19th-century A. & C. Black (Edinburgh) multi-volume edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart., illustrated with steel engravings after watercolours by J. M. W. Turner. The series forms part of the long publishing tradition associated with Scott?s works after his death, inspired in part by the activities of the Abbotsford Club?founded in the 1830s to honour Scott?s literary legacy and preserve historical texts connected with his Abbotsford estate. Each volume in this edition contains two principal illustrations: a full-page steel-engraved frontispiece and a title-page vignette, both engraved by leading 19th-century craftsmen. In the case of The Lady of the Lake (Volume III), the frontispiece depicts Loch Katrine, and the title vignette shows Loch Achray, both engraved by William Miller after Turner?s celebrated landscape designs. Turner?s series of Scottish views, originally commissioned in the 1830s for earlier Cadell editions, became iconic visual companions to Scott?s romantic poetry and were reused in later A. & C. Black printings such as this one.…

English This is a mid-19th-century A. & C. Black (Edinburgh) multi-volume edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart., illustrated with steel engravings after watercolours by J. M. W. The series reflects the long posthumous publishing tradition surrounding Scott?s work, linked in spirit to the Abbotsford Club?founded in the 1830s to honour Scott?s literary legacy and the historical associations of his Abbotsford estate. Each volume contains a full-page steel-engraved frontispiece and a title-page vignette. In Rokeby (Volume IV), the frontispiece presents Dryburgh Abbey?Scott?s burial place?while the title vignette depicts Bowes Towers, both engraved by William Miller after Turner?s atmospheric landscapes. Turner?s original series of Scottish and northern English views, commissioned in the 1830s for earlier Cadell editions, became enduring visual companions to Scott?s verse and were faithfully reused in later A. & C. English This mid-19th-century A. & C. Black (Edinburgh) edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. is illustrated with steel engravings after watercolours by J. M. W. Turner, a continuation of the Turner-illustrated tradition associated with the legacy of the Abbotsford Club. In this volume V, the frontispiece shows the junction of the Rivers Greta and Tees near Rokeby, engraved by John Pye after Turner?s original design. The title-page vignette depicts Staffa (including Fingal?s Cave), engraved by Edward Goodall after Turner?s atmospheric treatment of the Hebridean scene. First commissioned for Cadell?s edition in the 1830s, these views were reused here in this early Victorian reissue to complement Scott?s verse with vivid landscapes.…

Manuscript Fair Copy, in an eighteenth-century hand, transcribing two poems: 'Prize Monody on the Death of David Garrick Esqr. ffor the Vase at Bath-Easton, By Miss [Anna] Seward.' and 'To Miss Seward | Impromptu' by 'W[illiam] H[ayley].'

Añadir al carritoTotalling 5pp., 4to, with Seward's poem on the first 3pp., and Hayley's on the following 2pp. Disbound from a notebook. In good condition, on lightly-aged and worn paper which has been cropped at the foot, resulting in the loss of two lines of text from Hayley's poem, and with the strip with the trimmed line from the foot of the first page of Seward's poem laid down at the head of the second page. The status of this item is unclear: there are indications (for example the subtitle 'Impromptu' of Hayley's piece) that it provides a text of Hayley's poem as circulated in manuscript before publication. The two poems are written in the same calligraphic hand (not, apparently, Hayley's), on two loose bifoliums of laid paper (both with the same fleur-de-lys watermark), placed one inside the other, so that the last three pages are blank. Seward's poem begins: 'Dim Sweeps the Show'r along the misty Vale, | And Grief's low accents murmur in the Gale. | O'er the damp vase Horatio Sighing leans, | And gazes absent on the faded Scenes;' The end of line eight - the phrase 'Roseat Ribbons join'd', has clearly been added later. Line sixteen ('Thro' the light magic of his playful dreams.'), having been trimmed from the foot of the first leaf, is on a strip of paper laid down at the head of the second page. Very like the version published in the Scots Magazine in February 1779, with occasional minor variations ('wont' in the manuscript version for 'us'd' in the printed version; 'light' for 'like'). Hayley's poem has 'W. H'.' at the end. Lines 18 and 19 (the second of the two indicated by the rhyme scheme) appear to have been trimmed away. Comparision with the version published as "To Miss Seward" (without the 'Impromptu' subtitle) in the Whitehall Evening Post of 16 June 1781 shows some variations. In the published version, line 15 is followed by: 'In that fair semblance, with such plaintive fire | She struck the chords of her pathetic lyre, | the weeping Goddess owns the best relief, | And fondly listens with subsiding grief:' In the manuscript, line 15 is followed by 'Proclaim'd herself the friend of Andre's youth: | [text trimmed away] | The weeping Goddess owns the blest relief, | [.]'.…
