Hard Cover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Jacket - Pictorial Cover. First Edition. First edition. An exceptional copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2017 Hard Cover. xviii, 406 pp. The practice and the representation of flaying in the middle ages and after are considered in this provocative collection. Skin is the parchment upon which identity is written; class, race, ethnicity, and gender are all legible upon the human surface. Removing skin tears away identity, and leaves a blank slate upon which law, punishment, sanctity, ormonstrosity can be inscribed; whether as an act of penal brutality, as a comic device, or as a sign of spiritual sacrifice, it leaves a lasting impression about the qualities and nature of humanity. Flaying often functioned as animaginative resource for medieval and early modern artists and writers, even though it seems to have been rarely practiced in reality. From images of Saint Bartholomew holding his skin in his arms, to scenes of execution in Havelok the Dane, to laws that prescribed it as a punishment for treason, this volume explores the idea and the reality of skin removal - flaying - in the Middle Ages. It interrogates the connection between reality and imagination in depictions of literal skin removal, rather than figurative or theoretical interpretations of flaying, and offers a multilayered view of medieval and early modern perceptions of flaying and its representations in Europeanculture. Its two parts consider practice and representation, capturing the evolution of flaying as both an idea and a practice in the premodern world.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In a world where social media, success, and status constantly pull our attention toward what others have, it's easy to feel like we're falling behind. We compare our lives, relationships, careers, and even spiritual journeys to those around us-chasing after illusions of greener grass while overlooking the blessings already in our hands. But what if what you see isn't the whole truth What if the 'greener grass' you envy is artificial turf In Can You See What You Can't See , Michael Leverett exposes one of the enemy's greatest deceptions-getting us to covet what wasn't meant for us and step out of position. Through biblical wisdom, real-life examples, and practical application, this book reveals how the enemy distorts our vision, tricks us into comparison, and tempts us to abandon our God-ordained purpose.Drawing from powerful biblical stories, Pastor Leverett illustrates how individuals like Eve, Lot's wife, the Israelites, and even Peter were deceived by the illusion of something better-only to lose sight of the blessings they already had. He also shares insights from his own life, emphasizing the importance of staying faithful to your unique journey, trusting God's timing, and embracing your personal season of growth. This book will help you:¿ Recognize the tricks the enemy uses to distract you¿ Stop comparing your life to others and trust God's plan¿ Stay in position and avoid stepping outside of God's will¿ Understand that seasons of waiting are not seasons of failure¿ Develop the patience and wisdom to cultivate what God has already given youYour grass isn't dead-it's just in a different season.Your success isn't delayed-it's just in preparation.Your blessings aren't missing-they're already in your hands. Can You See What You Can't See challenges you to break free from false perspectives, embrace God's truth, and walk confidently in the race set before you. Your reality is already enough-if only you have the vision to see it.…
