Añadir al carritoMichael van der Gucht Ilustrador. A large folio edition of The History of the Old and New Testament by Sieur de Royaumont, published in London in 1699. This is the second edition, corrected, and is extensively illustrated with 234 engraved plates depicting biblical scenes, together with three maps, including a large folding map. The engravings are finely executed and include work by noted late 17th-century engravers such as Michael van der Gucht and others associated with this edition. The volume is bound in later full red leather, with raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine. The binding shows noticeable rubbing, surface wear, scuffing, and wear to corners and edges, consistent with age and handling. Despite this, the binding remains sound and structurally solid. Internally, the work is complete, with all 234 engravings and all three maps present. There is moderate to heavy foxing and age toning throughout, along with occasional staining, including to the title page and some leaves. The paper shows expected age-related wear, but the text and engravings remain clearly legible throughout. A substantial late 17th-century illustrated biblical work, notable for its large format and extensive engraved content.

SymonTitle pages vary slightly: v. 2-3 have "Publish'd monthly" for "To be publish'd monthly"; v. 4 has neitherIssued in monthly parts, with separate title page and accompanying leaf; parts 1-4 are dated 1725, parts 5-9 1726 (information from LC record). These leaves, unsigned and not included in pagination, were evidently meant to be removed before binding, resulting in the 6-leaf gatherings. The Law Library copy, in consequence of a binder's error, includes two such pairs of leaves in v. 4, gatherings U and BB. The sequence of leaves in gathering U is as follows: U1 (p. 293-294); unsigned leaf with caption title "Acta regia. Number XXII." (or "Number XXIII." in gatherin BB) followed by advertisements on recto and verso; U3 (p. 297-298), U2 (p. 295-296), U5 (p. 301-302), U4 (p. 299-300); part t.p., designated "Number XXII. for June. Continuing the reign of King James I." (or "Number XXIII. for July. Concluding the reign of King James I. With an appendix.") and with price "1 s." following imprint, and on verso, the publisher's precis of the part; U6 (p. 303-304). The extra leaves, a bifolium, would thus have formed a wrapper for the whole number. The order of leaves in gathering BB is similarly disarranged. These extra leaves are disregarded in the signature statement given hereThe abridgment of tome 1 in vol. 1 is by Jean Le Clerc; Rapin-Thoyras's abridgment of tome 1 is in the appendix to vol. 4, p. 322-542.Includes full-page portrait engravings of all the monarchs of England, each with coat of arms; signed "M. Bidloo had already published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam in 1685; the illustrations were based on drawings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). Sales, however, were apparently quite slow, and much to Bidloo's displeasure, Cowper (1666-1709) acquired 300 complete sets of the plates from the publisher. He published these, along with a new text, under a new title and under his own name. His own contribution to the pictorial program consisted only of nine additional plates on myology, which he had drawn by Henry Cook (1642-1700) and engraved by Michiel van der Gucht (1660-1725).,.References: Choulant 95 - Wellcome II, 401 - cf.
