Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. Most stars appear to show some degree of magnetic activity. Varying magnetic fields show up in the familiar sun-spot cycle and in similar activity in other cool stars. Many hot stars carry steady magnetic fields stronger than the average solar field and are well described as oblique rotators. A similar model is applicable to the rapidly rotating, enormously dense neutron stars with their far stronger fields, observed as radio and X-ray pulsars. Galactic magnetic fields may play a crucial role in star formation, and in the spectacular behaviour in galactic nuclei. Cosmical magnetism in general is a rapidly developing field, and this book has grown out of the lifelong work of an outstanding researcher in the area. An authoritative account with broad astronomical scope, its thorough, careful and well-argued approach makes it a fine addition to the professional literature. Most of the important topics are treated in mathematical depth with references to other relevant literature. Some of the studies, especially those on accretion discs, dynamos, and winds, are applicable to galaxies and galactic nuclei. This book is sure to become an invaluable professional reference and guide to current thinking in the field. It will be of particular interest to graduate students, for whom it shows how the area has developed and indicates the many challenging research problems, some of which may soon yield their secrets to the emerging supercomputers.

Cover has some wear and soiling. "Papers . presented at the combined Fifteenth Texas Symposium and the Fourth ESO-CERN Symposium, which was held on December 16-21, 1990, in Brighton, U.K." The five mornings were devoted to plenary lectures and the four afternoons to three parallel minisymposia on neutron star and black hole astrophysics, particles astronomy--status and prospects, and large-scale structure and galaxy formation. There was also a minisymposium held over two evening sessions on space-based and lunar-based astrophysics. On the evening of Tuesday, December 18, 1990 Dr. Stephen Hawking gave an open lecture on "The Beginning of the Universe" (pages 315-322). The New York Academy of Sciences (originally the Lyceum of Natural History) was founded in January 1817. It is one of the oldest scientific societies in the United States. An independent, non-profit organization with more than 20,000 members in 100 countries, the Academy's mission is "to advance scientific research and knowledge; to support scientific literacy; and to promote the resolution of society's global challenges through science-based solutions". In 1823, the Lyceum began publishing its own scientific journal, then the Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York, now the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. The Academy has made significant contributions to science during the course of its history, including publishing one of the first studies on environmental pollution in 1876; conducting a scientific survey of Puerto Rico from 1907-1934; the first conference on antibiotics on 21 July 1948; publishing the first volume on the cardiovascular effects of smoking in 1960; the founding of a Women in science Committee in 1977; the world's first major scientific conference on AIDS in 1983; and a conference on SARS in 2003.
