Hardcover. Condición: New. Since 2003, American artist Richard Phillips (born 1964) has made numerous appropriations of paintings by the Swiss artist Adolf Dietrich (1877-1957). Phillips shares with Dietrich a fondness for such subjects as animals, people and landscapes, stylized into an extreme degree of artifice. Phillips' app…ropriations and quotations of Dietrich's motifs orient his own aims firmly within the logic of art history (specifically the modernist canon), and Dietrich, known in his day as 'the German Rousseau,' and winning acclaim under the constrained terms of 'naive,' also proves to be a sophisticated modernist artist. In this volume, published to accompany an exhibition at the Swiss Institute in New York, Phillips' works are presented alongside Dietrich's, accompanied by an essay on Dietrich by Phillips, a conversation between Beatrix Ruf and Phillips, a text by Dietrich scholar Dorothee Mesmer and an introduction by Gianni Jetzer and Markus Landert.

Paperback. Condición: New. Born as the youngest of a poor Swiss farming family's seven children, Adolf Dietrich (1877-1957) supplemented arduous farm work and various jobs in a textile mill, as a woodcutter, and railway worker, with art. Gaining increasing recognition in Germany and Switzerland, his participation in the exhibiti…on Les maîtres populaires de la réalité in Paris, Zürich, and New York in 1937-38 marked his breakthrough internationally. Until today, Dietrich's work is regarded by some as a prime example of 20th-century naïve painting, while other scholars place him closer to the post-expressionist movement of New Objectivity. For the first time in nearly sixty years, Dietrich's work has been shown in a vast retrospective at Kunstmuseum Olten in Switzerland, in summer 2015 in which his pictures were accompanied by paintings of artists such as Cuno Amiet, Otto Dix, Giovanni Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Henri Rousseau, or Félix Vallotton. This coinciding new monograph is richly illustrated in colour throughout, featuring some 160 works by Dietrich and the other artists. The essays contextualise his art and highlight Dietrichs' lasting significance.Text in English and German.

Hardback. Condición: New. In her paintings, the Swiss artist Regula Syz (b. 1946) opens up a space for contradiction. They depict blossoming life, but also foreboding and destruction. To this end, the artist works with elementary manifestations of the life cycle, which she links to humankind's internal and external struggles. Re…gula Syz's oeuvre, which spans more than fifty years, is characterised by a turning point in 1999: a studio residency in Genoa marked her transition from precise watercolour techniques to large-format acrylic paintings; beauty and harmony were followed by expressiveness and movement. Red Raven - Black Poppy focuses on this second phase of her work, though it also features earlier works and excerpts from her sketchbooks, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of Syz's artistic practice.Text in English and German.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. One of seven children from a poor Swiss farming family, Adolf Dietrich (18771957) supplemented arduous farm work and jobs as a woodcutter and railway worker with a robust artistic practice. Although he was self-taught and never left the family home, he nevertheless rose to prominence as an i…mportant figure in the history of naive and outsider art and post-expressionist New Objectivity. This richly illustrated book offers an accessible introduction to Dietrichs astonishing body of work. Although he achieved some early recognition in Germany and his native Switzerland, his major breakthrough into the international art scene came in the late 1930s, when a traveling exhibition celebrated his paintings as prime examples of twentieth-century naive art. This characterization of his rural landscapes, still lifes, and portraits of animals and people continues to be disputed by many since his style cuts a path between naive art and the post-expressionist movement of New Objectivity. Produced in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Olten, Switzerland, this book reproduces many of Dietrichs paintings for the first time in more than fifty years alongside works by his contemporaries, including Cuno Amiet, Otto Dix, Giovanni Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Henri Rousseau, and Felix Valloton. Rounding out the book are essays by Katja Herlach, Markus Landert, Dorothee Messmer, and David Streiff exploring Dietrichs continuing influence. The first comprehensive monograph on Adolf Dietrich in English, examining his style which is regarded as being between naive and new objectivity. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardback. Condición: New. Nives Widauer: Villa Nix features a retrospective of Nives Widauer's oeuvre of three decades. The book documents the the Vienna-based Swiss artist's two-part exhibition at Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris and at Kunstmuseum Olten in summer and autumn 2020. The Paris show, titled Antichambre, was a prelud…e and subsequently integrated entirely into the larger presentation Villa Nix at Kunstmuseum Olten, the latter's architecture allowing the actual experience of seven different rooms at Widauer's imaginary house. As the title suggests, Widauer created for her art a home that is accessible for visitors, who can delve into and explore her imaginary mental spaces and her physical installations and works. Both the villa's and the artist's names are variations of the latin term for snow. The rooms at Villa Nix are intimate, historic and dense spaces in which she arranges a closely selected constellation of her work, thus creating resonating environments as an antichambre, an archive, a garden, or the unknown room. They work as mnemonic spaces and are at the same time rich in historic and cultural connotations while structuring the book like chapters. Introductory texts and conversations reflect the character of these spaces and the artworks they house. Text in English, French and German.Published to accompany an exhibition Nives Widauer: VILLA NIX, at the Kunstmuseum Olten, Switzerland between 21 September and 17 November 2019.
