Light cover soil. No owner's name or bookplate. Original maroon cloth. Includes a chapter entitled: Staten Island and Crown Grants. There is another chapter, The Indian and Crown Grants, which begins as follows: "It is a fully recognized fact of history that when the early European settlers landed upon the shores of Staten Island they then found it in full and complete possession of the American Indians. The Indians held undisputed sway over its villages, hunting and fishing grounds, and stood prepared and ready at any time to defend the same, as was clearly shown in their subsequent deeds of valor when resisting the unjust and offensive encroachments of the early settlers. Authorities have somewhat disagreed as to the precise nature of the title held by the American Indians to the soil which they possessed. The continental chancellories of Europe, promptly upon the discovery of America, promulgated their decrees branding the American Indians as nomads. They laid down the proposition of international law that the European Government had an absolute right to each and every land on the American continents, which either they or their representative citizens should discover. Proprietorship by right of discovery was asserted, with utter disregard to what were the true and inalienable rights of the American Indians." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'The Power of the Crown in the Valley of the Hudson' is a detailed historical and legal examination of the British monarchy's influence on the development of the Hudson River region. This work explores the complex relationship between the English sovereign and the North American colonies, specifically focusing on the legal mechanisms of royal grants, land titles, and the exercise of imperial authority in the New York territory. The narrative delves into the foundational laws that governed the Hudson Valley, providing a comprehensive analysis of how crown prerogatives shaped the social, economic, and political landscape of the region. By examining historical precedents and legal documentation, the author illustrates the reach of the monarchy's power from the highest levels of governance to the specific rights over the river's waters and shores. This study is an essential resource for those interested in American property law, the colonial history of the Middle Atlantic states, and the enduring legal legacy of the British Empire in the United States. 'The Power of the Crown in the Valley of the Hudson' serves as both a regional history and a broader investigation into the roots of American sovereignty. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible.
