Die Konstruktionen in Holz sind in alter Tradition von Wohn- und Wirtschaftsbauten der bäuerlichen Bevölkerung abgeleitet worden. Deren Architektur mit ihren typologischen Formen drang wohl als Idee in diese Abgeschiedenheit vor. »Die Idee von einer Kirche als Bauwerk«, mitgebracht von Geistlichen und wandernden Handwerksmeistern aus den fruchtbareren Ebenen und den reichen, großen Bergbau- und Handelsstädten.Die ältesten Kirchen wurden bereits im 15. Jahrhundert erbaut, die meisten der jetzt noch erhaltenen im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert, und etliche entstehen noch heute. Viele wurden in den beiden Weltkriegen zerstört, viele fielen ethnischen Säuberungsmaßnahmen nach 1945 zum Opfer, manche verfielen in der Sowjetzeit, andere verbrannten durch Blitz oder Kurzschluß, nicht wenige aber wichen ganz einfach schon seit dem 19. Zu ihrem ästhetischen Reiz gehören auch das oberflächenverwitterte Material, verformte Baukörper, Farbimprovisationen, neuerdings ornamentiertes Blech, im Inneren Wandmalereien, Altar- und Ikonostase-Ausstattungen aus Renaissance und Barock, vor allem aber ihre Lage im Dorf, meist isoliert, oft erhöht, umgeben von alten Bäumen, Einfriedungen und Gräbern ohne Friedhofsordnung.
