Hand-coloured engraving. Dimensions: 380 x 250mm. (15 x 10inches). From "Index Testarum Conchyliorum", first edition. Giuseppe Menabuoni and Antonio Pazzi were both Italian painters and printmakers and Niccolà Gualtieri was a medical doctor and professor at the University of Pisa, whose avocation was the study of molluscs. He devised a system of classification of the shells for this book, which was admired by the zoologists, such as Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Menabuoni's splendid plates reproduce specimens of Gualtieri's shells, some of which are still in the collection of the Museum of Natural History and the Territory in the Certosa di Calci, operated under the auspices of the University of Pisa. They are at once scientific studies, and also decorative works of art exhibiting the interplay of the natural colors, textures, and shapes of the shells in an Italianate arrangement.

Copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 14" x 9" Beautiful 18th century natural history engraving depicting ten views of four different shell specimen. This print appeared in "Index Testarum Conchyliorum", published in Florence in 1742. Drawn by Giuseppe Menabuoni and engraved by Antonio Pazzi. In excellent condition, with some small wormholes in lower left margin, not affecting the image. Niccolo Gualtieri (1688-1744) was an Italian medical doctor, malacologist, and natural history collector. He was best known for his collection of mollusks, which were cataloged and published in his book "Index Testarum Conchyliorum, quae adservantur in museo Nicolai Gualtieri", or "List of the shells of shellfish which are preserved in the museum of Niccolo Gaultieri." Many of his specimens were used by Linnaeus in his "Systema Naturae." Gaultieri was a professor at the University of Pisa, where his collection now resides in the Museum of Natural History. MENABUONI, Giuseppe (ilustrador).
