Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. 168pp. "In 1967, when Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand were still relatively unknown, curator John Szarkowski linked their work indelibly in the groundbreaking exhibition NEW DOCUMENTS at The Museum of Modern Art. Although few at the time could have predicted it, NEW DOCUMENTS signaled a watershed moment in the history of American photography. What Szarkowski recognized in the three artists was a shared fascination with the commonplace and a novel application of a documentary language to personal expression. 'They like the real world,' Szarkowski wrote, 'in spite of its terrors, as the source of all wonder and fascination and value--no less precious for being irrational.' Their conviction that life's frailties and imperfections are worth examining remains today a premise as vital as when they were first starting out. [] Despite the importance of NEW DOCUMENTS for posterity, no catalogue was produced at the time. ARBUS FRIEDLANDER WINOGRAND marks the exhibition's fiftieth anniversary and presents for the first time, in full-page reproductions, the ninety-four photographs that hung on the walls of MoMA, freshly contextualized with an abundance of archival material. Essays by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister and photographer and critic Max Kozloff, who originally reviewed the exhibition for the Nation in 1967, shed new light on the enduring significance of the exhibition and on the legacy of these three essential artists." [jacket back copy] "Curator John Szarkowski wrote in his introductory wall text for the 1967 exhibition NEW DOCUMENTS that 'what unites [these three artists] is not style or sensibility; each has a distinct and personal sense of the uses of photography and the meanings of the world. What they hold in common is the belief that the commonplace is really worth looking at, and the courage to look at it with a minimum of theorizing. [] The portraits of Diane Arbus show that all of us--the most ordinary and the most exotic of us--are on closer scrutiny remarkable. The honesty of her vision is of an order belonging only to those of truly generous spirit. [] Lee Friedlander, standing at a greater emotional distance from his subjects, reconstructs our world in precise and elegant metaphors, showing its people in and through their most valued environments: their homes and offices and shops and pageant grounds. [] Garry Winogrand's jokes, like those of Rabelais, are no less serious for being funny, and, in the best sense, vulgar. His taste for life, being stronger than his regard for art, makes him equal even to the task of confronting the comedy of his own time. [] These three photographers would prefer that their pictures be regarded not as art, but as life. This is not quite possible, for a picture is, after all, only a picture. But these pictures might well change our sense of what life is like." [jacket flap copy] "It's hard to overestimate the influence that these modest, slice-of-life scenes would have on subsequent generations of photographers."--The New Yorker. Pristine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in a bright-as-new jacket covered in archival mylar. Quite presentable.…
