La scoperta della collezione d'arte di Hildebrand Gurlitt, rimasta nascosta per decenni, ha suscitato un grande scandalo nel 2013. Gurlitt, fino ad allora poco conosciuto, è stato uno dei principali protagonisti nel commercio di opere d'arte che i nazisti confiscavano nei musei e rubavano nei territori occupati. Meike Hoffmann e Nicola Kuhn raccontano per la prima volta la vita di questo eclettico mercante d'arte. Pioniere dell'arte moderna, Gurlitt era molto ammirato negli anni '20. Tuttavia, nel 1930 viene destituito dal suo incarico di direttore di museo a causa della crescente opposizione di destra e perde nuovamente il posto nel 1933. Poco dopo, inizia la sua ascesa come collaboratore e profittatore del regime nazista, vendendo "arte degenerata" e conquistando il mercato dell'arte nelle aree occupate. Si arricchisce vendendo opere destinate al museo progettato da Hitler a Linz e, già nel 1948, torna in carica come direttore del Kunstverein di Düsseldorf. Doch kurz danach beginnt sein zweiter Aufstieg als Kollaborateur und Profiteur im Nationalsozialismus. Er verschafft dem Deutschen Reich Devisen durch den Verkauf von »Entarteter Kunst«, geht nach Paris und erobert sich den Kunstmarkt in den besetzten Gebieten. Er wird reich mit Bildern, die jüdischen Sammlern geraubt wurden - und ist schon 1948 als Direktor des Kunstvereins in Düsseldorf wieder in Amt und Würden.
