Bouke van der Meer, is an important and leading standard work within the scientific world of classical archaeology and Etruscology. The book revolves entirely around the Liver of Piacenza (Iecur Placentinum): a bronze model of a sheep's liver that was found in Italy around 1877 and dates from approximately 100 BC. In antiquity (especially among the Etruscans, who lived in Italy before the Roman Empire became very large), priests (haruspices) used the organs of sacrificed animals, particularly livers, to ascertain the will of the gods and predict the future. This is called hepatoscopy. The bronze model is unique because it is divided into different planes with a total of 42 inscriptions in Etruscan. Each plane and each name represents a specific deity. In his book, Van der Meer explains how the liver is actually a map of the heavens. The Etruscans believed that the cosmos (the heavens) was divided into different houses of gods, and that this division was reflected in the liver of a sheep. For historians and archaeologists, this book is crucial because it provides an in-depth analysis of how the Etruscans thought about religion, polytheism (the belief in multiple gods), and religious rituals.
