Añadir al carritoCard. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Hartley, P.J. (Phil.) Ilustrador. First. EXTREMELY RARE. An account of the 1942-43 construction of a telephone line across Newfoundland, connecting the American bases at Fort Pepperell, St. John's, to Harmon Field, Stephenville, along the Newfoundland Railway right of way; a project briefly described in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador under "Telephone". Not in O'Dea, not cited in ENL or Dictionary of Newfoundland English (either edition.) Only copy listed in AMICUS is the National Library's preservation copy; perhaps the source of the photocopies of this item held at the MUN library. Approximate publication date; earliest possible date based on the inclusion of facsimiles of articles published late in 1944. 173+pp., photos, map, facsims, appendices. Heavy card, almost "yearbook" style covers, and the printing style inside is also suggestive of period yearbooks. Seems to have been printed privately for presentation to Bell Telephone men involved in the project. Includes an appendix listing those who worked on the project. This copy was presented to A.B. Donaldson, who is listed in the appendix as being one of the Bell men who arrived on the project on August 28, 1942. For better or worse, includes some of the earliest attestations in print of the word "Newfie". Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
