Hardback. Condición: New. Literary Tourism and the British Isles: History, Imagination, and the Politics of Place explores literary tourism's role in shaping how locations in the British-Irish Isles have been seen, historicized, and valued. Within its chapters, contributors approach these topics from vantage points such as feminism, cultural studies, geographic and mobilities paradigms, rural studies, ecosystems, philosophy of history, dark tourism, and marketing analyses. They examine guidebooks and travelogues; oral history, pseudo-history, and absent history; and literature that spans Renaissance drama to contemporary popular writers such as Dan Brown, Diana Gabaldon, and J.K. Rowling. Places discussed in the collection include "the West;" Wordsworth Country and Brontë Country; Stowe and Scotland; the Globe Theatre and its environs; Limehouse, Rosslyn Chapel, and the imaginary locations of the Harry Potter series. Taken as a whole, this collection illuminates some of the ways by which "the British Isles" have been created by literary and historical narratives, and, in turn, will continue to be seen as places of cultural importance by visitors, guidebooks, and site sponsors alike.…

Condición: Near fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. A layered association copy, first inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Dr. George A. Hall, with all good wishes, Kay McCracken." Uncommon signed. Also laid in is a note "from the desk of Brian R. Chapman" that reads: "Dear Dr. Hall--Thank you for selecting me to review this book forThe Wilson Bulletin. I hope that you enjoy this copy. Brian." Connie Hagar, the book's subject, was a pioneering and still under-recognized birder whose mid-century observations in southernmost Texas came to be extremely valued by top ornithologists such as Roger Tory Peterson, who writes the forward to this biography and first met Hagar on his Wild America big-birding-yeartrip with James Fisher. She embodies the emerging contributions of citizen science as birding exploded in popularity. Karen McCracken, her biographer, learned birding from Hagar.George A. Hall was a prominent ornithologist and a professor of chemistry and forestry at West Virginia University and was the editor of The Wilson Bulletin, the journal of theWilson Ornithological Society.Brian R. Chapman was an ornithologist and mammalogist at Texas A & M and became the provost at West Texas A & M. Among other publications, he was the co-author ofThe Natural History of Texas. Thus a wonder cluster of associations in relation to birding and Texas natural history. A near fine book in blue cloth with a little rubbing to edges. McCraken's inscription to Hall is struck through and the ownership signature of Estelle Evans is found above it. In a very good baby blue jacket with sunning to spine. …
