Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very close to new copy. Traces the rise of small, entrepreneurial airlines that served isolated communities and tourist destinations across the country. It covers operators like Southern Scenic Air Services in Queenstown, Tourist Air Travel in Auckland, Amphibian Airways, Trans Is…land Airways, and Golden Coast Airways. These companies often flew amphibious planes, vintage aircraft, and light twin-engine models, adapting to rugged terrain and unpredictable weather. Waugh and his co-authors—Bruce Gavin, Peter Layne, and Graeme McConnell—combine technical detail with storytelling, highlighting the personalities behind the planes, including legendary pilots like Fred Ladd. The book includes maps, facsimiles, and colour and black-and-white photographs. It also documents notable incidents, such as the 1961 Aero Commander crash involving Captain Alf Bartlett, and includes appendices on surviving aircraft and specific models like the de Havilland DH89B Dominie.

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. This copy would be like new but for a short closed tear to one page which we have repaired. "Aviation's influence on Nelson has been profound. With challenging road access, no rail link and the barrier of Cook Strait, Nelson had the reputation of being a 'sleepy hollow'. It was isolated and in s…ome way still is, yet has never been the same since the first aircraft visit in 1921. After aero club beginnings, a pioneering scheduled airline was established at the Stoke Airfield in 1935. The opening of Nelson's new airport at Tahunanui in 1938, close to the city centre, was a key milestone for the region's social, economic and tourism future. The airport led to a wartime air force station and a growing post-war airline scene. It became the main commercial aviation centre for the upper South Island, including helicopter work. Illustrated by many rare photographs, this book tells the story of Nelson aviation - its aircraft, personalities, innovations and events - and how it helped develop the whole sunny province. Nelson Airport serves more than 750,000 passengers annually, is the hub for the country's largest regional airline and is the fourth busiest airport for scheduled flights in New Zealand."--Publisher description. (Heavy volume for outside NZ).

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. A very clean copy with a vivid name to the first blank end paper. Scarce example. This copy is signed by Graeme McConnell on the title page. The book explains how the government brought together several small airlines after World War II to form NAC, creating a state-owned airline that connected t…owns and cities across the country. Over its 31 years, NAC carried more than 30 million passengers and became a household name. The book shows how NAC's fleet evolved—from early de Havilland biplanes to modern Boeing 737 jets. It highlights the importance of the Vickers Viscount aircraft, which were used on major routes and became a symbol of the airline's reliability and style. There are stories of airport development, including how Wellington's airport had to be upgraded to handle larger planes. The book also includes incidents like the 1963 Viscount slide at Rongotai, adding drama and realism to the history. What makes this book stand out is its use of over 500 photographs and illustrations. These images capture everything from aircraft interiors and uniforms to behind-the-scenes operations and promotional material. The authors also explore the social side of NAC—how it became part of everyday life, how staff formed close-knit teams, and how flying changed from a luxury to a common way to travel. Signed by Author(s).

Hard Covers. Condición: NF. No Jacket. 1st. Richard Waugh has made an important contribution to NZ aviation literature with a number of titles to his credit. For "Taking Off" he led a foursome of aviation ethusiasts and writers to produce this volume which has as its sub-titled "Pioneeering Small Airlines of New Zealand 1945-197…0." The book was published to mark the 100th anniversary of powered flight and dedicated to those who worked for the New Zealand pioneering postwar small airlines and "especially in memory of those pilots who lost their lives.". (The dedication names seven pilots.). In an introductory note to an acknowledgements list Richard Waugh says that "The stories of these small postwar airlines have been neglected in the written history of NZ aviation and mostly overlooked by social historians." There is no doubt that "Taking Off" has done much to correct this literary imbalance by recalling some familiear names, but more importantly by recording those of less well-known commercial aviation pioneers. The main text is presented in 11 chapters, each dealing with the larger and longer-lived postwar airline operators while a 12th chapter covers numerous "Other small airlines which flew (or almost) 1959-1970." Undoubtedly "Taking Off" filled a space in NZ aviation literature which was emptly for too long and it can be unreservedly recommended to any Kiwi aviation enthusiast. It will form a lasting tribute to the men of the small airlines and the aircraft they flew. This copy signed on the title page by Richard Waugh and his three co-authors. First edition of 2003, 228 pages including appendices of surviving aircraft from small airlines of 1945-1970, a history of DH Dominie ZK-BCP/VH BGP and "Air Crash Injustice" a review of controversial investigations of the crash of Bay of Plenty Airways Aero Commander in November 1961, followed by references and index, illustrated throughout with b/w photos plus a 25 image, centrally located, collection of colour photos, few maps and drawings, numerous document reproductions. Laminated hard covers are NF with colour photos to both boards, internally also NF. Signed by author and co-authors on title page. An immaculate copy of an excellent publication. Photos, Maps, Document Reproductions, Drawings (ilustrador). By the Authors.
