The reputation of the Evergreen Review grows ever more golden as time passes. Celebrated for its design, radical political content, and literary, intellectual excellence. Bright full-color endplates by Rick Griffin. 385 pages printed on archival paper. A magnificent and complete full-color recreation… in book form of all 12 issues of the legendary psychedelic newspaper originally published in the Haight-Ashbury 1966-1968. The book contains each and every page of all 12 issues printed - in all their original brilliance. "Open any page and you are back on the streets of the Haight-Ashbury at a time when that tiny urban spot was the Olympus of the newborn world." Laid in with the book is a sheet advertising The San Francisco Oracle Facsimile Edition Publication and Book Signing Party, November 17th, 1991. The Oracle was one of the most unique and beautiful publications of the 1960's and is now a cherished legend. The Oracle is remembered for its extraordinary graphic design by major San Francisco artists, its rainbow colors, and cultural explorations and breakthroughs in its articles, interviews and poetry. Writers who appeared in The Oracle include: Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey, Alan Watts, Tim Leary, Michael McClure, Norman Mailer, Jerry Rubin, Paul Krassner, Buckminster Fuller, Carl Rogers, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), Lawrence Ferlinghetti and others. Artists include many of the great San Francisco Poster artists such as: Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelly, Bruce Conner, Michael Bowen and Gary Grimshaw. This Collector's Edition belonged to Raymond Knight, a collector of visionary art, and an early supporter of the press (see p. ixx). The title page is SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY ALLEN COHEN with his unique stamp, Michael McClure, and carries an inscription to Raymond Knight. The front color endpapers are signed by Jim Phillips and John Thompson who has drawn a small third-eye caricature. The beautiful color frontispiece for the Collector's Edition is signed by poster artist Rick Griffin. The copyright page is inscribed "with special appreciation to Raymond, Mark Weiman, Publisher." Additionally inscribed or signed by George Tsongas p. 31; Michael McClure above his poem "The God I Worship is a Lion" p.110; Joel Beck p.117; Jim Phillips p. 143; Ami Magill p.169; Gene Grimm p.173; Ami Magill p. 175; and Stephen Gaskin on the rear free endpaper. A unique and important signed association copy. Excellent condition, tiny spot of wear at head of spine, otherwise clean and tight, contents very bright and sharp, a solid volume throughout. The sturdy slipcase has a few small spots of wear and smudging, still very nice. Near Fine, Slip Case Near Fine. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Signed.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Quarto with gilt-embossed crimson cloth boards. Text block moderately soiled with a minor moisture wave, boards slightly bowed, also afflicted by some soiling, weakened hinges. Prospectus, related ephemera, and list of signatories laid-in. 385 pages. First facsimile edition, inscribed pro…fusely with vernacular illustrations. Handled extensively in the collection of signatures. Previous owner was once a bookseller and is now an accomplished book artist and fine printer (Sam Amico of The Middle Earth Press). An incredible array of names, with all (except artist John Thompson who signed on the flyleaf and drew an occult symbol) inscribing or flat-signing the pages that feature their Oracle contributions. The list includes: Allen and Ann Cohen, Ken Kesey, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, the surviving members of Big Brother and the Holding Company (including Getz), etc. Rumor has it that the original owner embellished the Kesey page with his own illustrations while tripping on mushrooms; he told the story to Kesey, and Kesey inscribed his reaction. Most of the signatures were gathered at the book's release party, the rest were friends of the printer. Profound psychedelic 60s artifact with cast-iron provenance. Good. Signed by Author(s).

0 Includes illustrations. From Zine Wiki: The Floating Bear was a newsletter that ran from 1961 to 1971, edited in New York, NY, U.S.A., first by Diane di Prima and Leroi Jones and then later, by issue 25, by Diane alone. Published nearly every month and distributed by mailing list only, it was a fantastic platform for several s…chools of writing to come together, including the Beat writers, the New York School, Black Mountain and other revolutionary writers of that time. Later, after issue 28, when di Prima relocated to Topanga, CA, it featured some of the San Francisco Renaissance writers. This weighty carrier of words held the works of Frank O Hara, Michael McClure, Ed Dorn, Charles Olson, Joel Oppenheimer, Diane Levertov, Phillp Whalen, Jack Spicer, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, William S. Burroughs, John Wieners and both the editors, plus many more. It was never sold and supported by the editors and donations. The people who received copies were considered part of a literary and creative community, all of them kindred spirits. It was a great tool of the times as this mimeographed newsletter would reach a few hundred people every few weeks. So, if your work was showcased, it was read and quick. 37 issues were printed. The last issue printed as 'The Intrepid-Bear Issue' (Intrepid no 20/ Floating Bear no 38. ) LeRoi Jones was arrested for homoerotic content of his play Dante's System of Hell in Issue 9. You can find a great deal about this publication in a few Diane di Prima s novels and writings. Very good. fold in the middle as this was mailed to recipients. mild toning.

Tabloid. Condición: Good. Side folding tabloid newspaper printed on thick paper stock. 8 pp. Drawings throughout. First and only issue of this anonymously issued newspaper, created by Ed Sanders, the brainchild of Fuck You, a magazine of the arts. In this paper, Sanders satirizes the literary scene of which he was a part of, and… incorporates a lot of sex talk, some very explicit. There is also a rogue poem by Michael McClure, some comics, etc. GOOD condition. Faint horizontal fold crease present. General toning, moderate soiling and staining to the covers. Pages 3 through 6 with a half moon area missing, presumably nibbled away by a literary rodent.

Condición: Near Fine. First edition. Complete first edition set of all 12 issues of the San Francisco Oracle, plus the second and third editions of the 7th issue and additional variant of the 10th issue. Bookended by the Oracle's single-issue predecessor P. O. Frisco and single-issue successor Harbinger (virtually the 13th issue… of the Oracle) for a total of 17 broadsides, each 12 - 52 pp. Near Fine with typical toning and minimal soiling and edgewear, subscription creases to several issues, and light foxing to covers of Harbinger and fourth issue of Oracle. A spectacular run of the voice of Haight-Ashbury. P. O. Frisco, which lived and died in a single issue published September 2,1966, began with articles including "Concentration Camps Ready for 'Subversives,'" "The Craft of Masturbation," and "Lenny Bruce: what can you say." Features on culture and politics were supplemented by an art page and a recipe for hashish brownies. After the individualists on staff won a power struggle with the collectivists, the paper was reborn as the San Francisco Oracle just three weeks later. The style was more distinctly psychedelic, with a focus on personal liberty, and the back cover was printed with the editors' "Prophecy of a Declaration of Independence": "We hold these experiences to be self evident, that all is equal, that the creation endows us with certain inalienable rights, that among them are: the freedom of body, the pursuit of joy, and the expansion of consciousness." Over the next two years, the paper's contributors included the countercultural icons Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, Laurence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Alan Watts, and Buckminster Fuller. The issues had themes like "Aguarian Age" and "Youth Quake" and combined articles and poetry with hand-drawn advertisements for health food stores, music sellers, and hippie fashion boutiques. The publishers introduced split-fountain color printing with the sixth issue to create a rainbow roller effect, and the newspaper's graphics and layout came to define the look of hippie culture. The worker-owned paper folded in 1968, and staff members who had relocated to Middletown put out a singe issue called Harbinger which was effectively the thirteenth and final issue of the Oracle. At its peak, the paper was printed in a run of 125,000 copies, and made an outsized impact on American culture as the rest of the country looked toward Haight-Ashbury. The editor Allen Cohen later wrote: "It began as a dream and ended as a legend.".

Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Number One, Spring 1964. 103 pp. Illustrated magenta wraps. Very Good with sunned and faintly stained wraps, creased spine, old price written on front free endpaper. The first and only issue of a mostly expatriate literary journal compiled in Tangier, Morocco. It features the photos of Jack S…mith (stills from his film Flaming Creatures), as well as work from famous Beats Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, and William S. Burroughs. The latter's influence on Bob Dylan was profound. This literary magazine was featured on Dylan's mantelpiece on the front cover of the album Bringing It All Back Home as per Dylan's request, which is a testament to that influence that also made this one-off production an instant cult favorite.
