Featured in the flyer are "The Guarded Flame" & "Vivien". Maxwell was a successful and fairly prolific novelist - playwright, who was popular on both sides of the Atlantic. On the front is a quote from the publisher about "The Guarded Flame" : "The title has a metaphorical meaning. This is a domestic story, in which the writer attempts to give a realistic picture of the home-life of a great thinker ? a man honoured by all the world, but known to the world only in his work. The book may be considered as a study of the union of mind and matter, and its keynote is perhaps the resultant conflict between thought and life." PHYSICAL DETAILS : Publisher's flyer. single sheet, approx. 4 3/8" x 7 1/16", printed on both sides, black on buff. CONDITION -- NEAR FINE -- A small nick to one side, else in excellent condition.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very good. - Three letters typed by Maxwell on his 9-3/4 inch high by 7-3/4 inch wide "Lichfield House" stationery. In his first letter dated "Feb. 26, 1920", Maxwell has typed over 185 words responding to the American impressario and lecture manager James B. Pond about possibly scheduling a series of lectures "I have to thank you for your letter of February 10th, and am much obliged to you and to my good friend Hugh Walpole. In reply, let me say at once that I should like to lecture in America under your auspices if you consider that you can make a success of it." Signed "W.B. Maxwell". There is a small chip to the top right edge of the sheet and Pond has stamped that he has answered the letter at the top. Maxwell's second letter, dated "2nd March 1920" consists of only 40 words. Maxwell is concerned that "The delivery of letters between your side and ours seems still very precarious." and he is sending a copy of his initial letter to Pond. Signed "W.B. Maxwell". There is a paper clip stain at left and Pond has stamped that he has answered the letter at the top. By his third letter with over 100 words, dated "21st May 1920", Maxwell has apparently made other commitments and replies to Pond who has finally written back, offering hope that he might be able to lecture the following year "Since writing to you I find that it will be quite impossible for me to get away this year for lecturing, and I note that you are good enough to say that you can arrange for me as well next year." Signed "W.B. Maxwell". There is a minor crease to the top left corner, a small piece out from the bottom corner and a faint paper clip stain at the top. All are in very good condition.
