Numbering only 2,500 in 1900, their increase during the 20th century has more than kept pace with the extraordinary growth of the city as a whole and is now estimated at 510,000. They have played a major role in the economic life of the city, from the Hellmans and Newmarks of the 19th century to the film producers, home builders and financiers of our own day. Los Angeles Jews have also contributed broadly to the cultural and educational growth of their city, while maintaining and advancing a rich religious and cultural life of their own. Based upon the general press of the 19th century and supplemented by the Jewish press of the 20th century, this work is the first full treatment of the Jewish community of Los Angeles.
