Original dark brown cloth boards but with spine perished and crudely repaired with lengthwise strip of old dark brown tape overlapping spine onto adjacent area of boards; spine tape has handwritten title/author in white ink albeit with some flaking; board edges worn particularly at corners. Edges toned with faint moisture staining evident at lower fore-edge and bottom edge; interior leaves have faint to light moisture stains of varying depth at same bottom corners. Detached and edge-worn front free endpaper toned along gutter and with past owner's ink inscription dated 1874; antiquarian ink signature of different owner on front flyleaf; old ink notation at top corner of page 17; extensive pencil notes on rear flyleaf verso and rear free endpaper recto; occasional pencil markings found in page margins. Text block still firmly bound. Sold as is and should be re-backed at a minimum. Translated by G.A. Matile into English from the original French which was first published in Paris in 1853 under the title "Etudes historiques sur l'influence de la chariteÌ durant les premiers sieÌcles chreÌtiens et consideÌrations sur son roÌle dans les socieÌteÌs modernes.".…
