The third edition of a celebrated work by Jacob Masen (1606-1681), a Jesuit theologian, poet and historian; it was compiled for use in Jesuit dramatic presentations and is still used today as an index for understanding Baroque imagery and emblematics. The book features an engraved title page. Antiqua typeface; the title page con…tains a woodcut device with the motto "In manibus Dei Sortes Meae"; other pages are decorated with woodcut initials and tailpieces. Provenance: The title page has an ownership note of the Cistercian monastery of Osek in North Bohemia (Ossegg in German) and a later ownership stamp of a Jesuit college. The front endpaper has a simple recent bookplate of Petr Vopenka (1935-2015), a Czech mathematician and philosopher.
