Meditata concordia Protestantium cum Catholicis in una Confessione Fidei. Cologne: Johannes Busaeus, 1661. Octavo. Engraved title-page. [16], 126, [1] pp. Contemporary limp vellum binding formed from a reused medieval manuscript leaf; covers slightly toned and rubbed, but sound and very attractive. An exceptionally handsome example of a seventeenth-century book bound in a genuine thirteenth-century theological manuscript. The wrapper is formed from a vellum leaf written in a fine mid- to late-thirteenth-century Gothic bookhand, with red rubrication and paragraph marks, preserving part of the Catena aurea on the Gospel of St Luke, the celebrated patristic commentary compiled by Thomas Aquinas in the 1260s. The dense scholastic script, alternating authorities, and careful rubrication indicate that the fragment once formed part of a substantial university or monastic codex, very likely produced in northern France, the Low Countries, or the Rhineland. The reuse of such a leaf as binding material reflects a widespread early-modern practice by which obsolete or damaged medieval manuscripts were cut up to serve as durable wrappers for printed books. In this case the result is particularly striking: the warm patina of the vellum, the clarity of the hand, and the survival of rubricated headings give the volume a strong visual presence and preserve a tangible witness to high medieval scholastic culture. The printed text itself is an irenic Jesuit treatise by Jacob Masen, seeking theological concord between Protestants and Catholics in the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War. The combination is historically resonant: a Counter-Reformation work devoted to confessional reconciliation encased in a fragment of one of the central monuments of medieval Catholic exegesis. A fine and evocative hybrid object, uniting thirteenth-century manuscript scholarship with seventeenth-century theological controversy, and a particularly attractive survival of manuscript waste in binding.
