The third edition of a celebrated work by Jacob Masen (1606-1681), a Jesuit theologian, poet and historian; it was compiled for use in Jesuit dramatic presentations and is still used today as an index for understanding Baroque imagery and emblematics. The book features an engraved title page. Antiqua typeface; the title page con…tains a woodcut device with the motto "In manibus Dei Sortes Meae"; other pages are decorated with woodcut initials and tailpieces. Provenance: The title page has an ownership note of the Cistercian monastery of Osek in North Bohemia (Ossegg in German) and a later ownership stamp of a Jesuit college. The front endpaper has a simple recent bookplate of Petr Vopenka (1935-2015), a Czech mathematician and philosopher. A complete copy. /// Parchment binding with coloured edges; hardback, [16]+[56]+1122+[72] pp., 12° (10 x 17.5 cm), cover worn and discoloured, ribbons missing, parchment backstrip damaged, chipped and unskillfully fixed with sturdy paper and adhesive tape, bottom head-cap only partially preserved, top edge partly darkened, endpapers yellowed and worn, front endpaper has old call numbers written with pen and a few pencil notes, title page has old call numbers, ca 30 pages tanned, some pages yellowed or foxed, other signs of wear and age are rare (small ink/water stain, minor creases etc.), condition: good Book Language/s: Latin.

U.a. unterrichtete er Rhetorik und Poetik, und nach der Weihe 1648 wirkte er als Priester und Schriftsteller in Köln, Paderborn und Trier. Es sind jedoch in erster Linie seine dichtungstheoretischen Schriften, die seine wissenschaftliche Bedeutung ausmachen. So wird sein "Speculum imaginum veritatis occultae" noch heute als Index zur Erschließung barocker Bildsprache und Emblematik verwendet.- Titel mit zeitgenöss. Bibliotheksvermerk.
