However, many IT investments fail to deliver returns, and firms aiming to realize benefits from joint IT investments through value co-creation face critical challenges. Accordingly, the overall goal of this cumulative dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of how IT creates business value in inter-organizational networks. Moreover, value co-creation is analyzed in the specific context of the wood industry to capture the underlying contextual conditions and increase the practical relevance. Following a reference theorizing approach, this thesis extends current theorizing on IT business value research to the inter-organizational level. In addition, this thesis also provides both cross-industrial managerial implications for organizations cooperating in inter-organizational networks as well as contributions specifically directed to organizations in the wood industry. Neben der langen Tradition von zwischenbetrieblichen Kooperationen haben kürzliche Entwicklungen zu einer erhöhten Anzahl und Bedeutung von Unternehmensnetzwerken geführt. Durch eine Verbesserung der Koordination und Kommunikation sowie der Ermöglichung von völlig neuen Arten der zwischenbetrieblichen Kooperation spielt IT eine kritische Rolle für die Zusammenarbeit in Unternehmensnetzwerken. Jedoch liefern viele IT Investitionen keine Erträge und Unternehmen, die unternehmensübergreifende IT Investitionen tätigen, stehen vor kritischen Herausforderungen. Das übergreifende Ziel dieser kumulativen Dissertation ist es daher, zu einem besseren Verständnis beizutragen, wie IT einen Wertbeitrag in Unternehmensnetzwerken leistet. Zudem wird das Themenfeld im speziellen Kontext der Holzindustrie untersucht, um die dahinterliegenden kontextuellen Bedingungen zu berücksichtigen sowie die Praxisrelevanz der Ergebnisse zu erhöhen. Auf Basis eines Referenztheorie-Ansatzes erweitert diese Dissertation bestehende Theorien der IT-Wertbeitragsforschung um die inter-organisationale Perspektive. Zudem werden sowohl branchenübergreifende Implikationen für Organisationen, die in Unternehmensnetzwerken kooperieren, als auch spezifische Implikationen für Organisationen in der Holzindustrie abgeleitet. 272 pp. Englisch.
