Though the authors use many methodologies to get at their subjects, they all include thick description of the cultural systems around which rock in the eight different countries is structured. The authors' insights into the detail and nuance of their topics will lead readers to new understanding of the subject of rock and roll and nationalism, and also provide them with a fruitful jumping off point for thoughtful further research. Most of the papers included in this volume were presented at two extraordinary international conferences, Popular Music and National Culture, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in November 2000 and Crossroads in Cultural Studies, held in Tampere, Finland, in June-July 2002. Liberman was Head of the Linguistics Research Department 1987-1990, AT&T Bell Laboratories, when the original Bell Labs TTS text-to-speech system was produced. The speech to text program has gone multilingual. Liberman moved on the the University of Pennsylvania, which is now the lead institution for the Linguistic Data Consortium. Liberman is the founder and director. (LDC) is an open consortium of universities, companies and government research laboratories, founded 1992. The LDC creates, collects and distributes speech and text databases, lexicons, and other resources for linguistics research and development purposes.

Perun's role among other Slavic deities is examined, as are: his relation to similar mythological figures in Indic, Classical, Germanic, and other mythologies; his mythological roots, attributes, relationships to the world of animals, plants; and meteorological phenomena. A special chapter shows how, often quite unexpectedly, Perun's presence manifests itself in popular works of Russian literature.
