Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This memoir is by and about George Taylor: the manuscript was handed down through generations of his family. It recalls the varied and interesting life of a man who, at the age of 50, moved his family from Kelso in the Scottish Borders to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the mid-nineteenth century. George Taylor was a gardener and nurseryman and, when settled in Kalamazoo, he soon established a successful business supplying plants and hedging. He was an award-winning horticulturalist and was responsible for the introduction of the cultivation of celery to the USA. In the course of hearing about George Taylor's life - including the death of three of his four wives in childbirth - we encounter people such as the widow of the man who supposedly served as the inspiration for Robert Burns' "Tam o' Shanter", and events such as the Great Fire of Chicago. From Kelso to Kalamazoo is all too rare a primary source testament to the realities of emigration from the lowlands of Scotland to the USA. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Co-published with the European Ethnological Research Centre in the Flashbacks series. Andrew Ramage was the son of a farm servant and he himself worked on the land in the Lothians and Berwickshire, in Scotland. Subsequently he became a dock worker, lorry driver and railwayman. Of the diary he kept over many years only three notebooks remain. The first covers Andrew's early life from 1884 until the mid 1870s and the period from November 1888 until April 1889. The last two cover July 1914 to June 1917. In his account the uncertain realities of rural employment and dwelling are revealed and they dispel the bucolic image often attached to descriptions of 19th-century country life. We learn of the travails of a young man making his way in the world at a time of great social and economic change and, later, of the concerns of parenthood and aging at a time of war-time strife.

Scottish Life and Society, Scottish Ethnology volume 7. "The movement of people from a rural to an urban environment is one of the most striking features of Scotland's past. This movement was the result of a shift in the general pattern of work from agricultural to industrial in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This was followed by a notable shift in the pattern of urban work, from manufacturing industry to the provision of services, in the late twentieth century. Beneath these general patterns there lies a myriad of individual lived experiences, also explored in this volume. As well as outlining the history of settlement and work, this volume considers the working lives of those engaged in feeding, housing and protecting the population, those who work to keep the population healthy, and those who are engaged in work of the imagination rather than work to meet material needs. Since the nineteenth century an increasing number of services have been controlled by government, both local and central. The importance of public service is discussed, as is the industrial way of life and the ways in which workers have to co-operate, in the interest of their employer, themselves and society." Unclipped dust jacket and book in excellent condition, content clean and bright, binding tight, gilt to spine bright. No inscriptions. Scottish Life and Society, A Compendium of Scottish Ethnology vol. 13 "The law comes from, and runs through, society at all levels. It regulates human interactions and touches individuals at key moments in their lives. This volume provides an easily comprehensible account of the law in Scotland, beginning with its historical development and professional structure before going on to consider the law as an institution. To understand the law as a cultural phenomenon it has also to be considered in application. The book reflects on the impact of the law on communities and on individuals at key stages of life. It provides a starting point for those wishing to understand the context in which law shapes, and is shaped by, life and society across Scotland." Kjellberg, Director of Sweden's G÷teborgs Historiska Museum (now called the G÷teborgs Stadsmuseum), and his assistant, Olof Hassl÷f, traveled through the islands of the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, in order to research the area's rich maritime culture. Their emphasis was on its material culture- the boats, the tools of the trade. Now, renowned ethnologist Professor Emeritus Alexander Fenton presents this pioneering research with additional material of his own.
