Condición: Sehr gut. Auflage: 1st Edition. 216 pgs., numerous col. ill. Very good copy, cover with small traces of wear. - On Halloween night in 1974, Ralph Lee, a mask maker and theater director, with the help of the Theater for the New City, convinced 150 friends and acquaintances to march through the streets of Greenwich Village wearing his masks and carrying his giant puppets. In doing so, Lee began a tradition that would quickly assume a life of its own, growing on a scale beyond anyone's expectation, least of all his. Lee responded by designing or incorporating from other performances ever more spectacular figures, including a 30-foot skeleton called the "Ghost of Tom" that was carried through the streets and then inside the arch at Washington Square where it performed a macabre dance; a 40-foot articulated snake capable of reaching down to kiss young children in the crowd, a giant Irish sea god riding in a chariot, and a 20-foot three-masted ship complete with scurrying rats. To help create the proper backdrop, Lee also designed the giant spider that each year climbs the side of the Jefferson Market Library and other creatures that emerged from buildings or otherwise made their appearances during the night's activities. As the parade continued to grow, Lee sought ways to keep the event intimate. He eschewed the use of a reviewing stand, and as long as he could get away with it there were no barricades to separate participants from spectators. As Allen says: ""Trans-gendered people offer the rest of us a potentially exhilarating -vision of fluidity, freed from traditional roles or definitions. They make vivid the questions: What is the essence of humannessbeyond masculinity or femininity?"" Framed by the emerging transgender political movement,The Gender Frontieris one of the first book to include both female-to-males and male-to-females, as well as queer youth. One of her subjects, Robert Eads, a female-to-male who died of ovarian cancer, was also prominently featured in the award-winning film ""Southern Comfort"". The text is in English, and German. Añadir al carritoIllustrated. Folio. dj. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Illustrated. Folio. Inscribed to "Teriyaki the Great / Thanks for your friendship over the years. Much love, Mariette." In 1978 Allen first met a trans woman, Vicky West, who invited her to Fantasia Fair, a transgender conference for which she eventually worked as the official photographer. She quickly became politicized and regularly attended conferences around gender identity, both as photographer and as presenter, and worked for Transgender Tapestry magazine. Transformations collects her photos of "male-to-female crossdressers" with their families in the years 1978-1989, as well as their stories When Transformations was published, it "was often placed in a bookstore behind a cashier on a high shelf, which kept people from buying it. Customers wouldn't ask for it, because they didn't want the cashier to suspect they were a crossdresser. A cashier told me it was the kind of book that 'walks' (that is, stolen)." The trans community responded positively to her work, which was a sharp contrast to the sensationalist, fetishist, or medicalist portrayals that could be found in publications at the time. Allen reported that after the book was published, "many people felt joy and relief to finally have a book that they could use to show who they were to their families, friends, and the outside world. I was told that the book saved marriages, and even lives."
