Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. viii, 88 pp. Original cloth-backed boards, with printed paper label on front board. Very Good. Second Edition. The second edition has 40 poems, whereas the first edition (1925) had only 19. INSCRIBED BY CHARLES S. SHERRINGTON TO MARGARET DENEKE: "To Margaret Deneke/ a tiny token of grateful/ remembrance/ C.S.S./ March 1942." This book was given by Charles Sherrington to Margaret Deneke in March 1942 because on March 4, 1942, Sherrington delivered the Philip Maurice Deneke lecture at Oxford, entitled "Goethe on Nature and on Science" (the lecture was published by Cambridge University Press in 1942). Philip Maurice Deneke was the father of Margaret and Helena Deneke. Quoting the Oxford DNB article about Helena Deneke, which also contains information about her sister Margaret: "The famous music room at Gunfield, the Gothic villa in Norham Gardens where Helena lived for five decades with her sister, the musicologist Margaret Deneke (18821969), witnessed 'much music making, not a little of it memorable' (M. Deneke, Ernest Walker). Generations of Oxford undergraduates, colleagues, and friends enjoyed the Denekes' hospitality at the many Gunfield concerts. For some twenty-seven years the Oxford Chamber Music Society met there free of charge, with Margaret Deneke making up any deficits; the society owed its survival, particularly during the Second World War, to the generosity of the Deneke sisters. Margaret Deneke, herself a talented pianist, was choirmaster at Lady Margaret Hall and, raising considerable sums of money through concerts and lecture recitals, became one of the college's benefactors." In his review of the first edition (1925) of Sherrington's book, the poet Alfred Noyes wrote: "This book of poems should interest all lovers of literature, not merely because of its author's eminence in the scientific world, but also for its own artistic quality. It contains the most accomplished verse that has been published in England by any man of science; and one of the most remarkable facts about it is that the point of view throughout is purely artistic. The poem on Keats, for example, is a poem of joy in the artistic handling of words. It shows them 'in music swayed attire,' shadows moved by the fire of thought. It shows them as 'raised trumpets blown at morn,' or as 'foamed sea-capes calling through mist.' It does not talk philology, but it finds them 'still across this day of ours weaving fancy's storied woof' " (Nature vol. 118, 11 September 1926, pp. 363-365). Signed by Author(s).…
