At the time it opens there had been very little contact between Maori and Euopean, but this was to change very rapidly with the newcomers well established by 1840. The book begins with a reconstruction of pre-European Maori society, then follows the colonial, political, military developments, and the interaction between the two races. Land issues, which led to conflict, are studied, as are the factors that quickly changed NZ to a European style society. All aspects of this development are covered in the imposing text on the country's formative first 100 years.
