This book, by an established scholar in the field, deepens our understanding of the photographer's role in the Victorian fascination with death, particularly in the postmortem portrait phenomenon. An interdisciplinary work spanning death studies, history, art theory, and cultural studies, this book examines how photography served as a tool for grieving families to immortalize the presence of the deceased within their lives and a medium for artists to comment on mortality and the boundaries between life and art. Through the lens of the postmortem portrait, the author traces how photography evolved as both a document of death and an art form, contributing to a profound reimagining of death in Victorian society. This study reveals how postmortem portraits challenged accepted ideas of mourning and remembrance and played a pivotal role in the emergence of photography as an art form.
