Angesichts dieser Entwicklungen liegt es nahe, die bisher verwendeten Argumentationsmuster der Religionskritik Revue passieren zu lassen und nachzufragen, ob sie für das 21. Jahrhundert unverändert taugen. Oder haben etwa doch diejenigen Recht, die behaupten, das religiöse Bewusstsein gehöre nun einmal zum Menschen und müsse daher weiterbestehen, solange es Menschen gibt? Kellner verfolgt deshalb verschiedene Formen der Religionskritik von der Frühscholastik über die Aufklärung und Hegels Ansatz, den personifizierten Gott durch die Logik oder den Weltgeist zu ersetzen. Als Wendepunkt der Religionskritik macht er Feuerbach aus, der die Frage, ob es Gott gibt oder nicht, für überholt erklärt und sich der Frage widmet, wie Gott in die Köpfe der Menschen kommt. Ein Ansatz, der fast unweigerlich zu Marx führt, der fordert, dass von der Kritik der Religion zur Kritik des Jammertals übergegangen werden müsse, auf dessen Boden Religion gedeihe, und zu Freud, für den religiöse Inhalte Projektionen des menschlichen Familienlebens sind. Schließlich bezieht Kellner wichtige Thesen moralisch motivierter Religionskritiker, wie Bucharin und Most, in seine Überlegungen ein. Religion.
