Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. First edition. First edition. 12mo. in red cloth lettered and decorated in black and with gilt depiction of a gospel tent. Frontispiece portrait engraving of the author. xi+ 189 pp. Very good, spine darkened , rounded tips and some spotting lower front board. A rather scarce (OCLC locates only 15… copies) memoir and historical treatment of "gospel tents" (alternately known as "revival tents") used for Christian gatherings for revival meetings, evangelism, healing crusades, and conversion baptisms. The practice of tent revival meetings in America began during the Second Great Awakening which occurred from the late 18th to mid-19th centuries. The beginnings of "tent meetings" took place in western New York State as the Christian religious movement spread outward from the traditional eastern New England region. These travelling events were often organized and held by itinerant preachers, usually in non-urban areas. The author here describes his first experiece with a gospel tent meeting as being his conversion to God as a young man, at the "Denton Union Meeting" in rural Maryland. Shortly afterward he began to preach at meetings in the Delaware-Maryland area He also held tent meetings in vacant areas of Philadelphia. In many instances, the tent meetings were precursors to the building of churches (usually Methodist) . Rev. Manship goes on to detail meetings as well and identifying some of the prominent men who attended them.
