La Scuola Agraria Carpi di Mantova, dal nome del suo fondatore, aveva iniziato la sua attivita' nel gennaio 1867. Giungeva quindi a conclusione il lungo percorso del lascito con il quale Felice Carpi, di famiglia ebraica, morto nell'aprile del 1854 destinava alla citta' il Palazzo ex Lanzoni (la casa del Mantegna) e l'annesso oro di tre ettari affinche' l'ente locale, con i proventi che ne avrebbe ricavato, avrebbe potuto stipendiare un professore di agraria con il compito di impartire lezioni gratuite e dirigere gli esperimenti pratici.
