We Were So Beloved: Autobiography of a German Jewish Community is built from interviews with German Jews who fled Nazi persecution and rebuilt their lives in Washington Heights, New York. The book traces how Kristallnacht shattered their belief that the terror would end, forcing families to abandon the country they once felt deeply connected to. Through personal testimonies, the interviewees describe betrayal by neighbors, the disappearance of relatives, and the shock of seeing a "civilized" Germany turn violently against them. Many recount their escape routes—some leaving before Kristallnacht, some immediately after, and others surviving ghettos and camps when emigration failed. In Washington Heights, more than 20,000 refugees formed a tight German Jewish enclave, preserving language, culture, and traditions as they rebuilt their community. The book also includes interviews with Saar-region Jews who returned to Germany after the war, reflecting on identity, belonging, and the possibility of reclaiming a prewar German self. Throughout the narrative, the interviewees insist that their German identity set them apart from other Jewish refugee groups, revealing complex layers of pride, loss, and cultural memory. Their stories highlight both resilience and grief—astonishment at survival, sorrow for those lost, and determination to rebuild meaningful lives. The book ultimately becomes a collective memoir of a community uprooted, transplanted, and reborn, illustrating how shared suffering forged a new identity in exile. It closes by prompting readers to confront the moral questions raised by these histories, including the haunting reflection: What would I have done? From the back flap of dust jacket: Gloria DeVidas Kirchheimer is editor for the Social Science Research Council. She has been a Fulbright scholar, a writer‑in‑residence at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Cummington Community of the Arts, and has had short fiction and essays published in a number of literary magazines and anthologies. He is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New York State Council on the Arts, among others. Book is clean and bright throughout, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Gently shelfworn untorn dust jacket. -- This book is the full transcript of Manfred Kirchheimer's acclaimed 1985 documentary film, which captures the voices and memories of a specific community: German-Jewish refugees from the Third Reich who settled in Washington Heights, New York. Through intimate interviews, primarily with his own family and friends, Kirchheimer explores the profound paradox of their experience: their enduring love for the German culture of their youth ("we were so beloved") set against the reality of Nazi persecution and their subsequent lives as assimilated Americans. The text serves as a powerful oral history, delving into complex questions of identity, survival, acculturation, and the psychological legacy of trauma.…
