This book offers a rich and captivating account of the reign of Mamlūk Sultan al-Mansūr Qalawūn from the perspective of al-Maqrīzī, a renowned historian of the era. The detailed narrative, translated from al-Maqrīzī's larger work, provides vivid insights into the political, social, and cultural dynamics of 13th-century Egypt and Syria. Through accounts of military campaigns, diplomatic missions, and everyday life, the author explores Qalawūn's rise to power, his consolidation of the Mamlūk Sultanate, and the challenges he faced during his reign. The book sheds light on the complex interplay between the sultanate, its military establishment, and the broader society it governed, offering a valuable resource for scholars and general readers interested in medieval Islamic history and the history of Egypt and Syria. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. He was occupied for more than sixty years in the studies of geography and history of the Semites. He studied Hebrew, and Silvester de Sacy taught him Arabic.
