Añadir al carritoRochdale: Printed by M. Lancashire, 1810. Rare. From Runnymede to Rochdale: A Rare Pocket-Sized Regional Printing of Magna Carta in a Superb Binding [Magna Carta]. Magna Charta. The Great Charter Made in the Ninth Year of King Henry the Third, And Confirmed by King Edward the First, In the Five and Twentieth Year of His Reign. Copied from "Statutes at Large," Vol. 1. To Which is Annexed, The Bill of Rights. Rochdale: Printed by M. Lancashire, 1810. 20 pp. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4"; 17 x 10 cm). Period-style mottled calf by Philip Dusel, gilt frames to boards, lettering piece, gilt fillets and gilt ornaments to spine, gilt tooling to board edges, text block edges are finished in yellow. Negligible light shelfwear to boards, light toning to interior, light soiling to title page, which has a small "13" at its head in ink, and a few other leaves, negligible fox-spots to bottom margins of a few pages. A fine copy in a superb binding. $1,500. * It is difficult to overstate the significance of Magna Carta. An agreement from 1215 that settled a dispute between King John and a group of nobles, its meaning "swiftly and fundamentally evolved through its thirteenth-century iterations into the framework for English freedom" (Sotheby's). The Bill of Rights followed in 1689 in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution, affirming fundamental civil liberties for citizens and establishing a basis for the rights and powers of Parliament. Both documents greatly inspired the American founders, among others. Together, they laid the foundation for much of Western political thought. Our 1810 edition was published in Rochdale, an industrial town in the Greater Manchester area. It appeared, alongside other similar titles, against a backdrop of increased interest in the English constitution as everyday citizens turned to Magna Carta and the Bill of Rights to demand greater political representation and true social reform. (Magna Carta's 600th anniversary in 1815 also played a role.) It includes a small critical apparatus of footnotes, mostly taken from Coke. This is a rare title. OCLC locates 1 copy (University of Sydney). None are added by Library Hub. Sotheby's New York, The Magna Carta (18 December 2007) 85. Rochdale: Printed by M. Lancashire, 1810. Rare. (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carrito(MAGNA CARTA). The Magna Carta, signed in 1215, was an agreement between King John and rebel lords who were angry with the kings unchecked powers. The legal document agreed that the King was not above the law, Royal officials had legal limits and established the freedom of the church.Silver facsimile. 1977. London. A silver facsimile of the Magna Carta and the double-sided seal of King John. This artifact was produced in 1977 by Louis Osman, a famous English silversmith and goldsmith. The text is raised and it is mounted onto an orange leather backing. It is further contained in two custom boxes, along with a space for the King John seal. There were supposed to be 500 replicas made, and this is number 118, as marked in the lower right corner. The British government loaned one of the four known Magna Cartas to the United States in 1976 in honor of its Bicentennial. Osman made the custom case that held the Magna Carta while in America. The next year, Osman created this silver facsimile. Osman also made a separate Magna Carta facsimile that is permanently located in the United States Capitol crypt. The silver facsimile is based on one of the two Magna Cartas held in the British Library, known as the Cotton MS Augustus II.106. The artifact has some silver tarnish on it (although the overwhelming majority has been removed) and the custom box has a few nicks and faults. An unusual memento of one of the great legal documents of the West.…

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Care, Henry. English Liberties: Or, the Freeborn Subject's Inheritance, Containing I. Magna Charta. First edition. 1682. One of the very first law books printed in colonial America presenting England's "fundamental laws" as the inheritance of free subjects. Issued during the Exclusion Crisis, the work articulated principles of jury trial, religious liberty, and limitations on governmental authority that later resonated in Anglo-American constitutional development. This volume contains the first printing for American readers of the Magna Carta and other fundamental documents of individual liberty in Anglo-American law, including "seminal documents on the separation of church and state, the right to religious liberty, trial by jury and other founding principles." The volume became influential among colonial readers and American founders, with Thomas Jefferson owning copies in his library. Its presentation of Magna Carta as declaratory of enduring liberties helped shape early modern and colonial understandings of constitutional rights. London: Printed by G. Larkin, for Benjamin Harris in 1680. Full contemporary sheep boards, 228 pages. Measures approximately: 5.5" x 3.25". With woodcut-engraved headpiece and initial. This first edition features a printing of the Magna Carta, "a symbol of political liberty and the foundation of constitutional government" (Grams). English Liberties aimed to provide uneducated laypeople with information about the law and their rights, praising England's 'fundamental laws [as] coeval with government' and describing the Magna Carta as 'Declamatory of the principal grounds of the Fundamental Laws and Liberties of England.' Thomas Jefferson found the work so important that he held two copies of this title in his library. Schwoerer writes that English Liberties influence is "in the writings of the founding fathers of the United States; Samuel Adams, John Adams, John Dickinson and Alexander Hamilton." This edition precedes the first American edition, which came out in 1721. Extremely rare in the first edition, especially anonymously published by Care and complete with all advertisements as originally issued. This copy is in its original state. Leather unglued from spine and front cover of the wood board, which has partially perished. Inside text block complete. Some tiny worming mostly affecting four lines of text from p.30 to p.50; all text still easily readable. Initial blank leaf damaged. Pages are slightly toned and otherwise clean. In good condition only but complete and very rare.…

Añadir al carritoEngraved Facsimile of the 1215 Magna Carta, engraved by John Pine, engraved central panel of text, the vertical borders decorated with by a series of 25 coats-of-arms of the Barons, and a representation of the remains of King John's Great Seal in the lower border, all panels surrounded by oak leaf and acorn borders, approx. 695 x 480mm, laid down on linen and mounted on a roller, the linen browned and the text slightly so . Engraved facsimile of the Magna Carta, 'a sacred text, the nearest approach to an irrepealable fundamental statute that England has ever had (Pollock and Maitland, History of English Law), and the most celebrated legal document in the English-speaking world. The engraving was commissioned from John Pine (1690-1756), following the fire at the Cottonian Library in 1731, which resulted in the only copy known with King John's seal being severely damaged. It was Pine's copy that was used by William Blackstone for his translation in 1759. John Pine (1690-1756), was a publisher, print- and map-seller, as well as 'Bluemantle Pursuivant' at the College of Arms, and Engraver to the King's Signet and Stamp Office. The present issue, on paper, was published by the engraver's son and pupil, the portrait painter Robert Edge Pine (1730-1788). Given Robert Edge's dates, this must have been issued well 'after 1733' as suggested in on-line catalogues. Very scarce.…
