Addressed to 'Dear Mrs. Bicknell' and signed 'Danl. Maclise'. Reads 'I very much regret to say that I have accepted an invitation to dinner on Wednesday when I might have had the pleasure of repairing to Tulse Hill and perhaps in company with my friend and your father whom I sometimes dare to call David'.

Olive-green morocco with elaborate gilt borders and floriated frames to front and rear boards. Five raised bands (six compartments) with contrasting gilt-embossed title on spine label, to second compartment. All edges gilt and inner dentelles and gilt roll turn-ins. Rubbing to extremities, minor scuffs and superficial gouges to leather. Lovely illustrations by London-based painter Daniel Maclise. Some light spotting to a number of pages (less than 1/5), but does not at all obscure. Blue silk marker, sewn in.
