Añadir al carritoWraps. Presumed first edition/first printing. [6], 125 p. Map This is a product of The Library of Congress Legislative Reference Service, with designators DS 556 C 2 and 72-203 F. The authors were a specialist in U.S. Foreign Policy, a specialist in Asian Affairs, and an Analysis in Asian Affairs with the Foreign Affairs Division. From WIkipedia: "The Congressional Research Service (CRS), known as Congress's think tank, is a public policy research arm of the United States Congress. As a legislative branch agency within the Library of Congress, CRS works primarily and directly for Members of Congress, their Committees and staff on a confidential, nonpartisan basis. Its staff of approximately 600 employees includes lawyers, economists, reference librarians, and social, natural, and physical scientists. In fiscal year 2012, CRS was appropriated a budget of roughly $106.8 million by Congress. CRS is joined by two major congressional support agencies. The Congressional Budget Office provides Congress with budget-related information, reports on fiscal, budgetary, and programmatic issues, and analyses of budget policy options, costs, and effects. The Government Accountability Office assists Congress in reviewing and monitoring the activities of government by conducting independent audits, investigations, and evaluations of federal programs. Collectively, the three agencies employ more than 4, 000 people. CRS reports are widely regarded as in depth, accurate, objective, and timely, but as a matter of policy they are not made available to members of the public by CRS, except in certain circumstances. There have been numerous attempts to pass legislation requiring all reports to be made available online, most recently in 2012, but none have been enacted. Instead, the public must request individual reports from their Senators and Representatives in Congress, purchase them from private vendors, or search for them in various web archives of previously released documents. In 1914, Senator Robert LaFollette and Representative John M. Nelson, both of Wisconsin, promoted the inclusion in the legislative, executive, and judicial appropriations act of a provision directing the establishment of a special reference unit within the Library of Congress. [7] Building upon a concept developed by the New York State Library in 1890, and the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Library in 1901, they were motivated by Progressive era ideas about the importance of the acquisition of knowledge for an informed and independent legislature The move also reflected the expanding role of the librarian and the professionalization of the profession. The new department was charged with responding to congressional requests for information The legislation authorized the Librarian of Congress, Herbert Putnam, to employ competent persons to prepare such indexes, digests, and compilations of laws as may be required for Congress and other official use.(The intent behind the creation of the agency can be derived from U.S. Senate, Committee on the Library, Legislative Drafting Bureau and Reference Division, 62d Cong., 3d sess., 1913, S. Rept.1271. ) Renamed the Legislative Reference Service and given a permanent authorization with the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946, it assisted Congress primarily by providing facts and publications and by transmitting research and analysis done largely by other government agencies, private organizations, and individual scholars. The Library of Congress, the home of CRS, had experimented during the 1940s with unrestricted publication Public Affairs Bulletins, which were produced by staff of the Legislative Reference Service, and devoted to various public policy issues. They were promoted by Archibald MacLeish, the Librarian of Congress, and, among other topics, addressed timely policy issues, such as American national defense. About 100 Public Affairs Bulletins were generated before congressional appropriators ended their production in 1951. The renaming under the Legislative Reorgani.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. No Jacket. C. H. M. Kerr (illustrated by) J. Cooper (engraved by) Ilustrador. Second Edition. Second trade edition, published in 1888. Second British edition (stated as new edition), first printing, 1888. The first edition was published in 1887. Illustrated with twenty full-page plates, including a frontispiece entitled "Portrait of Allan Quatermain", and some small vignettes within the text. All twenty plates are present and in good condition, and the tissue-guard protecting the frontispiece is still in place and undamaged. ***A near fine copy in maroon cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine and front board. As with many of the books from this period, there is some wear to the boards, and some marks commensurate with age and handling over the last 135 years. The silver titles are still nice and bright. Apart from some light rubbing to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine, the boards remain completely undamaged, with no splitting to the fragile spine. Page block edges clean. Very slight reading lean to the binding, but the spine is tight. Internally the book is also very good, with a neat ownership stamp to the front free endpaper. None of the splitting to the fragile paper covering of the endpapers over the gutters that is often found with these Victorian bindings. The book is firm and secure with no loose pages. Interior pages clean with hardly any foxing. No creases or tears. Illustrations engraved on wood by J. Cooper from drawings by C. H. M. Kerr. ***188mm x 130mm. 278 pages with a 16pp publisher's catalogue at the back of the book (dated 12/90 with a print run total of 75,000). ***'Sir Henry Rider Haggard KBE (22 June 1856 - 14 May 1925) was an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. He was also involved in land reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature and including the eighteen Allan Quatermain stories beginning with "King Solomon's Mines", continue to be popular and influential. "Allan Quatermain" is an 1887 novel by H. Rider Haggard, and is the sequel to Haggard's 1885 novel "King Solomon's Mines". Allan Quatermain is the second novel and fourth overall story in the eighteen-part series of the same name, though chronologically it is the final entry. Haggard wrote the book over his summer holiday in 1885 immediately after King Solomon's Mines. It was first serialised in Longman's Magazine before being published in book form.' (Wiki) ***A second trade edition of this adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1888, in excellent original condition. A beautiful copy, with numerous illustrations. Copies of Kipling's Victorian works in this condition are seldom found now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
