Illustrated with twenty full-page plates, including a frontispiece entitled "Portrait of Allan Quatermain", and some small vignettes within the text. All twenty plates are present and in good condition, and the tissue-guard protecting the frontispiece is still in place and undamaged. ***A near fine copy in maroon cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine and front board. As with many of the books from this period, there is some wear to the boards, and some marks commensurate with age and handling over the last 135 years. The silver titles are still nice and bright. Apart from some light rubbing to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine, the boards remain completely undamaged, with no splitting to the fragile spine. Page block edges clean. Very slight reading lean to the binding, but the spine is tight. Internally the book is also very good, with a neat ownership stamp to the front free endpaper. None of the splitting to the fragile paper covering of the endpapers over the gutters that is often found with these Victorian bindings. The book is firm and secure with no loose pages.
