When Woods and his partner, Matt Kuchar, won their opening Four-ball match, Woods became the all-time leader in victories in Presidents Cup history, breaking a tie with fellow American Jim Furyk. When the matches ended in a 17-17 tie, Ernie Els of the International Team and Tiger Woods of the U.S. Team were designated to compete in a sudden-death playoff. After three playoff holes, and as darkness was descending, Captains Gary Player and Nicklaus, in the spirit of the competition, decided that the two teams would share the Cup. That decision became the new rule in the event of a tie after the scheduled 34 matches. The U.S. Team won in 2005 back in Virginia and in 2007 in Montreal, Canada. Nicklaus and Player were the captains in both of those years. Couples and Greg Norman were the captains for the first time when the U.S. Team won in 2009 in San Fransisco. Couples' team got the better of Norman's squad again in 2011 at Royal Melbourne in Australia.
