La cubierta superior y los primeros cuadernillos están desprendidos del cuerpo del libro y la hoja paginada 451-451 está semi-desprendida y sufre faltas de papel en los márgenes aunque sin afectar al texto. La hoja siguiente tiene dos pequeñas rasgaduras, a la 771-772 le falta la esquina superior afectando ligeramente al texto y en las hojas finales un pequeño punto de xilófago en el margen superior que no afecta al texto. Por todo el libro señales de humedad y presencia de hongos. Medidas 115x165 mms. João Rodrigues, conocido por Amato Lusitano fue un judío, botánico y médico portugués. Viajó por toda Europa antes de establecerse en Ferrara, enseñando anatomía. Escribió varios tratados y se distinguió por sus estudios sobre la circulación sanguínea pero sus comentarios y adiciones al Dioscórides constituyen uno de sus trabajos más importantes aunque muy criticado sobre todo por Mattioli, su rival en la materia que le acusaba de errores en la identificación de las plantas y de falta de erudición. En gran parte a causa de los ataques de Mattioli fue perseguido por la Inquisición. Entre 1553 y 1558 de publicaron 23 ediciones de esta obra en diversas ciudades europeas y varios impresores, por lo que resulta sorprendente la escasez de ejemplares en bibliotecas, escasez que es particularmente aguda en el caso de la edición que nos ocupa, pues solamente he localizado un ejemplar en la BNE y otro en la Universidad de Salamanca.
