Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the remarkable life of Tod Sloan, a legendary jockey who revolutionized the sport with his innovative "monkey on the stick" riding style. From his humble beginnings in Indiana to his meteoric rise to fame in England and America, Sloan's story is a captivating tale of triumph, adversity, and the enduring passion for horses. Through Sloan's own reminiscences and insights from those who knew him best, the author paints a vivid portrait of a complex and enigmatic figure. Sloan's early struggles, his determination to overcome his fear of horses, and his eventual mastery of the track are chronicled with engaging detail. The book also explores the social and cultural milieu of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a glimpse into the world of horse racing and its colorful characters. Beyond the thrilling races and high-stakes bets, this book grapples with themes of perseverance, self-belief, and the transformative power of human-animal connection. Sloan's unconventional approach to riding not only changed the sport but also challenged traditional notions of horsemanship. His story reminds us that innovation and a deep understanding of our animal companions can lead to extraordinary achievements. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book recounts the fascinating experiences of the author, a young man embarking on a life of adventure with little more in his pockets than an array of peculiar gadgets and a passion for horse racing and gambling. Despite his lack of foresight when it came to packing for his voyage, the authorâs journey takes him from the racecourses and bookies of England to the wilds of Australia, where he witnesses the nascent years of the gambling industry and horse racing down under. Engaging and humorous throughout, the author positions himself amidst the bookmakers and layers of his time, sharing his first-hand experiences with notable personalities, and unpacking the social context that made betting on the races such a popular pastime. This book provides a unique and insightful look into the early days of gambling in both England and Australia, and will appeal to both racing enthusiasts and those interested in the historical development of gaming.
